[event]]: Earth Day Trashion show

My name is Josh Cowgill and I am helping organize a trash themed fashion show for Earth Day on Friday, April 20th from 2:00 – 2:30pm (preparations begin at 1pm). It will be held in a temporary pavilion in Red Square as a part of Husky Fest.  We are looking for anyone interested in designing an outfit.  The design does not have to be original to this show, but should follow the theme of reuse of materials that are considered waste.  Mostly, we would like people to join in and to have fun!

So if you, your club or someone you know is interested in partaking, contact me (Joshua Cowgill) by email: cowgijos@gmail.com, or phone (206) 941-6042.   This will be great for promotion as thousands of students, faculty, staff, and community members celebrate UW’s 150th anniversary in conjunction with Earth Day.  Also, designers’ information will be posted on the special event website:  http://www.washington.edu/huskyfest/

The only restriction is that materials should be reused from what is typically looked at as waste.  Materials such as: cardboard, paper, plastic, glass, metal and maybe even food waste!  Seeing as time is short, the requirements for a piece are also flexible.  We can talk through an idea and see how it can fit in.

This event is open to anyone!  The idea is to promote students and clubs, and most importantly to change people’s perspectives of “waste.” Come to a design workshop on 4/8 and 4/15 in Gould 114 from 12pm to 4pm.  Ideas, help, and some materials will be provided!

So start looking at your trash differently.  Try to envision an outfit with every piece of trash. Then take it, and make it brash!  Show everyone that waste is only a paradigm, and much of what we consider waste is still useful.

Thanks,

Josh

[volunteer] – Research Opportunity with SAFS wetland ecology lab

I am a graduate student in Charles Simenstad’s wetland ecology lab at the University of Washington, School of Aquatic and Fishery Sciences working in the lower Columbia River on Chinook salmon. I am conducting monthly sampling February through September and I am interested in recruiting volunteers. I will be collecting genetic samples and phenotypic information, in a variety of juvenile rearing habitat types, below is a brief summary of my project ideas and sampling design. All the dates are on weekends, so you would not be missing any class, and I will be able to provide all necessary field gear (e.g. waders, raingear, gloves, life vest). Feel free to contact me for more information by email or phone.

Research Objective: Is differing juvenile life history within a watershed produced by differing populations or do they represent within population variability? (A case study of Lewis River Chinook populations) Does rearing habitat diversity facilitate population diversity in Chinook salmon?

The sampling agenda will generally be to drive down Friday, sample three sites on Saturday and sample one site on Sunday and then drive home. Sampling will primarily be beach seining and pole seining Chinook salmon juveniles at several rearing habitat locations in the lower Lewis River and taking fin clips, length and weight measurements. I will be able to cover hotel, driving and eating expenses for all volunteers.

[intern] – Intern at COASST (citizen science project)

Late notice, I know, but we ARE looking to 2 students to sign up for 1-2 internship credits to bring COASST up-to-speed on outer coast data collection efforts (northern California – Chukchi Sea, Alaska).

For those that don’t already know, COASST is a citizen science project based at the University of Washington and involves ~800 people in the collection of rigorous, scientific data on bird mortality in the Pacific Northwest. The specific goals for this internship position are:

a) enter data; track species washing ashore this winter (Dec-Feb); provide updates to COASST staff (Charlie and Jane)
b) respond to urgent outer-coast volunteer needs (supplies, identification requests)
c) select exceptional photos and quotes for data profiles in publications
d) identify lapsed sites; check in with surveyors; set training location priorities

This amounts to 6-8 hours/week for the full quarter. Missing the first week should not be too much of a problem – we’re here from 8am-6pm most days. Also some Saturdays.

So we’re looking for a student with:
-Strong interest in science education and/or citizen science
-Background in biology or marine biology (some knowledge of birds, esp marine birds is good)
-Ability to commit to at least 6 hours/week, spring quarter for 1 internship credit
-Good organization skills (track sites, work under short timeline, move through data efficiently)
-Good communication skills (seek missing data from volunteers, coordinate with COASST staff)

Interested students are welcome to contact me via my info below; set up a time with Charlie and me to meet and discuss after 1pm this Tuesday, Wednesday, or Thursday (we’re both in FSH 254B).

And did I mention? We have do have sweet treats (brownies, cookies etc) almost every day… what other lab can compete?

Best,
Jane
