IslandWood 10th Anniversary

Hello,

This is David, one of the TA’s for ENVIR 100. Did any of you attend IslandWood (the outdoor education center on Bainbridge Island) when you were younger? If so, IslandWood wants to know if you are interested in participating its upcoming 10th Anniversary. This could mean sharing stories and memories, returning to IslandWood for a reunion, or letting the organization know how the School Overnight Program influenced your life. (If you were involved in a summer camp, high school internship, or other program, I’m sure IslandWood would love to hear from you, too!)

All you need to do is email my good friend Thatcher Heldring –thatcherh@islandwood.org – to let him know you are interested, and he’ll get back to you.

Thanks and have a great weekend!
David

PS – Never heard of IslandWood? Check it out – they even have an environmental education graduate program affiliated with UW!  (www.islandwood.org)

Peer TA for Environmental Studies 100: Interdisciplinary Foundations

The Program on the Environment is currently accepting applications for 3 peer TA positions for the winter quarter 2012 offering of ENVIR 100: Environmental Studies 100: Interdisciplinary Foundations. Peer TAs are registered undergraduate students with superior qualifications, who are trained in teaching skills, and serve in the same capacity as graduate student TAs. This is an exciting opportunity to gain valuable teaching experience while still completing your undergraduate degree. This would be especially valuable to students interested in environmental education or for students interested in applying to graduate school.

The total time commitment is anticipated to be approximately 15 hours per week. As a Peer TA, you will be responsible for attending the lecture for ENVIR 100 (3 hours per week), attending a weekly instructor meeting (approximately 1 hour per week), and managing one discussion section (2 hours per week). Additional tasks include: preparation for your discussion section; meeting with students during office hours, extra help or review sessions; and grading.

Peer TAs will earn academic credit (1-5 credits, variable, of ENVIR 498, graded).

PoE is starting a student organization!

The Program on the Environment started over a decade ago but has never had its own student organization!  We are looking for environmental studies students (that’s you!) who would like to start something awesome!

  • Do you want to meet and hang out with other PoE students?
  • Want to help with environmental volunteer efforts in the community?
  • Interested in improving your leadership skills?
  • Do you want to get more involved with the UW in general?
  • Is your resume looking a little empty?

If you’re at all interested, please e-mail us at poeadv@uw.edu and let us know.  No commitment is needed – just a quick e-mail indicating your interest and perhaps some things you think this new student organization should do.  We would love to hear from you!  At some point, we would like to get a group of students together and hash out ideas.
