Coastal Ocean Systems and Sustainability Program

2014 Summer Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REU): Coastal Ocean Systems and Sustainability program

with the USC Wrigley Institute for Environmental Studies 

Program dates:  June 16 – August 8, 2014 (8 weeks).

This NSF-funded program will support highly motivated and talented undergraduate students to conduct independent but guided research that focuses on Coastal Ocean Systems and Sustainability at the Wrigley Marine Science Center (WMSC) on Catalina Island, CA. 

Students will get hands-on research experience, training in laboratory and field methodologies, introductory lectures and seminars in oceanography and marine science, academic and career advisement, as well as opportunities to explore different parts of the island and ecosystems.  Other benefits include: $500/week stipend, housing at the WMSC, reimbursement for travel from host institution (up to $500), and transportation between the WMSC and the mainland.

We welcome applications from students who have completed at least one year of undergraduate study and will be enrolled as an undergraduate in the Fall of 2014.  Students must be U.S. citizens, U.S. nationals or permanent residents of the U.S. to be eligible for this program.  We especially encourage students from underrepresented groups in STEM fields or schools with limited research opportunities to apply.  This program will be particularly useful for undergraduate students with a strong interest in pursuing graduate school or a career in marine science.  Competitive applicants will have at least a 3.0 GPA, one semester of chemistry, one semester of biology, and one semester of calculus or statistics.

Healthy Farms and Healthy Families Campaign Internship

Food & Water Watch works to ensure the food, water and fish we consume is safe, accessible and sustainably produced. So we can all enjoy and trust in what we eat and drink, we help people take charge of where their food comes from, keep clean, affordable, public tap water flowing freely to our homes, protect the environmental quality of oceans, force government to do its job protecting citizens, and educate about the importance of keeping the global commons—our shared resources—under public control.

We are currently seeking spring interns interested in working for healthy farms and healthy families in Seattle, WA.  This position typically runs at least 10 weeks, for 10-20 hours per week.  Current student standing is not necessary. We are seeking interns to operate based out of Seattle, WA.
 
Potential Intern Positions:
 
Coalition Coordinator
·         Build a broad coalition in support of the campaign
·         Contact potential coalition partners to brief them on our campaign’s goals
·         Recruit and train volunteers
·         Attend weekly core group meetings, keep track of our progress in recruiting coalition partners
 
Grassroots Coordinator
·         Work with project coordinator and organizer to set campaign goals for grassroots tactics such as gathering petition signatures
·         Track and record the petition signatures we receive
·         Train volunteers in petitioning and other grassroots tactics, attend weekly meetings
 
Media Coordinator
·         Work with project coordinator and organizer to decide campaign strategy and goals for media coverage
·         Write news advisories and releases for campaign events
·         Make press calls to pitch stories and events and convince them to cover our campaign, cultivate relationships with reporters and editors
·         Recruit and train volunteers, attend weekly meetings
·         Track our interactions with the media, monitor the press we get on new and traditional media
 
Requirements:
 
Strong interest in food and environmental issues and commitment to social change. Desire to develop campaign organizing skills.

Anchor QEA, an environmental science and engineering consulting firm, is seeking a full-time Junior Chemist in its Seattle, WA office.
 

This position will be supporting the chemistry team with laboratory coordination, data package tracking, data validation, field data entry, and lab invoice approvals. Candidates for this position must have a Bachelor’s degree in a Science related field and excellent verbal and written communication skills. The ideal candidate will have 1 to 3 years of environmental analytical laboratory experience with an emphasis on data analysis, quality assurance/quality control components, data acquisition and reporting, and demonstrate knowledge or strengths in the following areas:

  • EPA methodologies including solid waste physical/chemical methods (SW-846)
  • Standard Methods for water and wastewater (APHA, AWWA, WEF)
  • Data review and data validation (EPA National Functional Guidelines)
  • Automated Data Review (ADR) data validation software
  • Strong communication skills
  • Ability to multi-task and coordinate large projects
  • Laboratory data processing, LIMS and EDD generation
  • Technical writing to assist with development of laboratory work orders and data reports
  • Database systems including MS Access, SQL Server, and/or MySQL

Project Overview: We are comparing two floors, a freshman floor
against a floor of upperclassmen. We are looking to see if there is a
difference in the waste patterns of students who are new against
students who have been at UW a while. We will be performing trash
sorts so that we can see the detailed waste patterns of each floor.

The waste sorts will be conducted on the following Thursdays – January
16th, 23rd, 30th & February 6th, 13th, 20th. The time frame for the
sorts will be from 12:15pm-4:30pm. It not necessary for each
individual to participate for the full four plus hours, but they are
more than welcomed to if they wish! It is preferred that individuals
participate weekly though, if for some reason an individual cannot
participate weekly we can try to work something out.This is a fun
research project and great experience for any of you that are
interested in pursuing research of any kind! All participants will be provided a suit for sorting, gloves, masks, etc. Everyone will receive information about how to sort waste and the observations that we are asking you to monitor.
