Please join UW for this year’s Earth Day kick-off event this Friday April 19th in Red Square, as we partner with UW’s Annual HuskyFest celebration! 

The Earth Day speaker program will open with Julia Parrish, Associate Dean of College of the Environment at 12:00 PM, followed by Anne Mosness from the Go Wild Campaign and then James Rasmussen from the Duwamish River Cleanup Coalition. Student Regent Chris Jordan will present this year’s Husky Green Awards honoring and recognizing members of the UW community who have demonstrated leadership, initiative and dedication to environmental stewardship and sustainability. Additionally, winners of the Green Office Competition and the Campus Clean Up will be recognized. UW Campus Sustainability Fund Outreach Coordinator Kyle Murphy will tie this all together as the Master of Ceremonies.

The exhibition groups will take place on Red Square beginning at 10AM. 

UW Earth Club has collaborated with a variety of groups on campus to arranged a full line up for not only Earth Day, but for Earth Week, April 18th through April 27th. A summary of additional events throughout the week following the UW Earth Day Kick-off event is below, details on these events can be found on the UW Earth Day Webpage.

  • Make an impact right on your campus with the University of Washington Recycling program. Interns will use GIS mapping to create an interactive map of the locations of compost bins on campus to help UW reach its goal of 70% waste diversion by 2020
  • Partner with the Seattle Aquarium to research into the potential effects that the gateway Pacific Coal Terminal might have on Pacific Northwest marine environments
  • The Seattle Department of Transportation is looking for an intern to help conduct research on pedestrian and bicycle traffic signal compliance on trail locations throughout the city and to give recommendation on how compliance can be improved

The Campus Sustainability Fund and Society for Ecological Restoration are asking you to “Get Dirty for the Earth” this Monday the 22nd, Earth Day, from 10-2. We will be planting native species and removing invasive species. Come whenever you can for however long you can between 10-2, and head over to McCarty Hall and look for the big CSF sign.
There will be live music, free food, and free tree seedlings and reusable shopping bags for each volunteer as a thank you. Earth Day is a time to celebrate but also recognize the commitment and responsibility we have to the place we live. We hope you will consider joining us! Join community members and local businesses for an afternoon of volunteering to restore the Duwamish River shoreline.  Volunteers will help dig out invasive blackberry, lay down mulch and plant native vegetation. This event will continue the Restore the Duwamish Shoreline Challenge initiated by BECU. Come learn more about the Challenge’s goal of uniting Tukwila’s business community for this local environmental cause and lend a hand restoring the Duwamish River’s ecosystem.

[course]: BIOL 240: The Urban Farm (SUM/2013)

Biology 240: The Urban Farm

3 Credits; Summer A-Term; [time schedule]

In this course students will learn the essential skills for maintaining soil health and turning urban spaces into productive landscapes.  We will cover: crop rotation, soils, urban farm planning, composting and cover cropping.   There will be a hands on component at the UW farm as well as field trips to some local farms (both inside and out of the city limits).   This is a great opportunity to develop a great skill (growing food) and thinking about how we can improve our food system from the bottom up!
