Breaking Down Barriers to Active Transportation in Seattle
Promoting alternative transportation is important in improving the sustainability of our communities. In my project, I gained first-hand experience working with a local active transportation advocacy organization and conducting a literature review. I evaluated greenways (routes that are designed to prioritize cyclists and pedestrians) from a user experience perspective so that they could be rated according to their comfort and safety. My experience and independent research helped me understand that there are infrastructure, political, environmental, and social barriers that restrict active transportation. I found that correcting the barriers, creating promotional campaigns, and gaining experience cycling provided opportunities for improvement.
