My Capstone project combined an internship with Island- Wood, an environmental education center on Bainbridge Island, WA with a volunteering experience at the Orca K-8 Alternative School’s garden in Columbia City, WA. At IslandWood, I helped children explore the environment freely and engage in activities that expanded their percep- tion of the natural world. On the other hand, volunteering at Orca involved a focus on garden education and under- standing the local food system. In both cases, I explored ways of facilitating the connection between children and local place to foster an environmental ethic.
