During my internship, I developed a matrix that details the at-risk facilities within the 42 Pacific Northwest Native American Tribes’ boundaries and their ability to respond to a hazardous material spill. I developed a list of the most at-risk tribes based on the different types of facilities within their boundaries, and then reached out to tribal representatives to gather information about their tribal response capabilities and hear any requests for further follow-up training. Concurrently, I researched the effects of oil on marine wildlife, and how the protection of these sensitive populations is a crucial component of oil spill response.
