Improving athletic initiatives to bring sustainability mainstream

Sporting events have a large impact on the environment. There are sustainability efforts underway to help create a positive impact, however, there is still work that needs to be done to make sure these efforts are successful. My internship with the athletic department aimed to support UW athletics sustainability efforts by completing an energy audit to determine what issues need to be addressed. My research question was focused on what barriers exist within sustainability efforts. I conducted scholarly research on the approach to sports sustainability. I discovered that sports sustainability offers a unique platform to influence the environment beyond sports.
