Stringent and proper regulation of nutrient management plans for agriculture ensures that the health of both people and the environment are protected. By analyzing and comparing the present nutrient management plans in the states of Washington, Oregon, and Idaho, I developed a better understanding of the problems and gaps in existing regulations. The research shows the State of Washington falling short of its counterparts in the Pacific Northwest because regulations are not adequately enforced and the State lacks mechanisms to ensure nutrient management plans are upheld.
