While interning in the Pesticides and Toxics unit at the EPA, there were several large bee kills in Region 10. The pesticide connection between these events made me interested in studying the effectives of our pesticide regulations. I studied pesticide policies pertaining to honey bees while researching causes of colony collapse disorder (CCD). I found that CCD is a complex issue with multiple causes and that some major differences in pesticide regulations in the United States and the European Union are caused by the speed and extent of invoking the Precautionary Principle. From my research I have suggestions for reform.
