I worked as an environmental affairs intern at the Fairmont Olympic Hotel in Seattle, tracking their existing environmental policies and seeking new, cost-effective environmental solutions. I focused on issues of waste diversion and energy savings in my research of how a large corporation, specifically a hotel, could become more environmentally sustainable while reaping financial benefits. My aim was to show the benefits of sustainable business to corporations. This connection is important to dispelling the idea that sustainability and successful business cannot work together.
