POLLUTION PREVENTION SPECIALIST

Job Summary

Under general direction of the storm water manager, and in collaboration with solid waste and wastewater program staff, assists small business owners with voluntary efforts to control, reduce or eliminate pollutants and storm water runoff by offering technical assistance and information on best practices. Responsible for identifying and coordinating site visits, preparing and distributing educational materials, completing checklists, preparing site visit reports and monthly reporting using WA ST Department of Ecology guidelines as outlined in the Local Source Control Partnership.  More information is available at http://www.ecy.wa.gov/programs/hwtr/lsp/index.html. THIS IS A GRANT-FUNDED POSITION FUNDED THROUGH JUNE 30, 2013. IT MAY BE RE-EVALUATED AT THAT TIME FOR SUCCESS MEETING OBJECTIVES, CONTINUED NEED AND AVAILABLE GRANT FUNDING. THE SELECTED INCUMBENT WILL NEED TO ATTEND MANDATORY TRAINING ON FEBRUARY 14TH AND 15TH.

 

Salary & Benefits:    $3,551 – $3,767 per month.

Excellent benefits include medical, dental and vision coverage for employee and dependents, life insurance, long-term disability insurance, vacation accrual, and PERS retirement.  Employee shares 10% of the medical premium. This position is included in the AFSCME Local #1619 Union.

[volunteer]: Natural Building, Grey Water Systems and Food Forests in Chile

Over the last month I’ve been supporting WASI (Women of the Americas Sustainability Initiative) Natural Builders, an organization that focuses on improvement of infrastructure with women in indigenous communities mostly in Central and South America. Over spring break we’ll be hosting a course in Chile focusing on Natural Building, Grey Water Systems and Food Forests. Most courses are two weeks, this one is unique in that students can come participate for a few days, one week or two weeks. [volunteer] Seattle Volunteer Naturalist Program

Discovery Park is launching a Seattle-wide Volunteer Naturalist Program!

              

Do you love sharing nature with others? Are you interested in learning more about the flora and fauna of the Seattle’s many parks? Then you might be the perfect candidate for the Seattle Volunteer Naturalist program.

Volunteer Naturalists participate in 10 weeks of training and commit to at least one year of volunteering at Environmental Learning Centers and parklands near schools throughout Seattle.  Volunteer naturalists provide hands-on learning opportunities for school groups and nature programs for families and adults and Discovery Stations throughout the city.  Volunteers’ backgrounds are as varied as the students they teach – the common thread is their desire to share nature with the greater Seattle community.

The goal of the Seattle Volunteer Naturalist Program is to enhance, promote and foster appreciation of nature by connecting citizens and students with their Seattle Parklands, by providing educational opportunities for all.

[event] PoE Cookie Cookoff!

The holiday season has come and gone, and with it came many parties and many cookies. To ring in the Winter quarter on a sweet note, PoE will be hosting a cookie cookoff. What we want to know is who can make the best cookie in PoE??

   

There is no specific cookie requirements for this cookoff, simply bring your favorite cookie to the office on Monday, January 23rd and we will put them to the test. Students will be invited to join in on the judging (bribing students with good grades is not allowed). And for those who don’t like to bake, your duty is to come help with the judging!

Tea will be supplied to help you clean your palate between tastings.

WSRA is looking for students to attend this year’s conference in Spokane. WSRA and its partner, The Recycling Foundation, award funds to help students participate in our annual conference. This is a great opportunity for them to learn and network and for us to help cultivate the next generation of recycling professionals. 

The award includes full conference registration. This entitles award recipients to attend educational sessions, workshops, exhibits, tours of recycling facilities, social events, meals and the WSRA Annual Awards Banquet. It also covers three nights’ lodging.

Food Soveriegnty Tours: Take a trip to Bolivia!

Food First has an upcoming delegation to Bolivia: “Llamas, Quinoa and Andean Food Sovereignty” March 10 – 19, 2012

           

The trip will explore the complex issue of rural development in Bolivia’s highland regions, focusing on two products central to Bolivian food security for centuries: llamas and quinoa. Participants will meet with communities and local organizations working in the breathtaking Altiplano region, including a homestay on Lake Titicaca, accompanied by a Food First policy analyst. All participants will receive a certificate of completion from Food First. Partial scholarships are available on a limited basis (early registration is encouraged). See attached announcement.
