The 17th Annual UW Undergraduate Research Symposium will take place from 11:00 am to 6:00 pm on Friday, May 16th, 2014 in Mary Gates Hall.  

The Symposium offers a wonderful forum for students to gain experience presenting their work and to engage in scholarly discussion with peers and faculty.  In spring 2013, over 1,000 undergraduates presented at this event and we expect this year’s celebration of undergraduate scholarship, creativity and faculty mentoring to be bigger and better than ever.

What are you doing this summer? Nourish International at the University of Washington offers students the opportunity to intern with community-based development organizations around the world. Nourish connects students with an interest in development and relevant skills to our partner organizations to further develop and implement community-driven projects for 5 weeks between July and September 2014. This summer, Nourish UW will be going to Uganda to partner with the Rural Health Care Foundation (RHCF). Nourish members will be working alongside community volunteers to build clean water systems that will directly impact over 1,500 rural peoples.

The Carlson Leadership & Public Service Center is pleased to announce an opening for a 50% time Student Engagement Coordinator. The Carlson Leadership & Public Service Center develops service-Learning, community-based participatory research, and leadership opportunities for UW students that sustain reciprocal partnerships, deepen learning, advance civic engagement, and contribute to our greater community. The Carlson Center is one of nine programs in the Center for Experiential Learning and Diversity that provide opportunities for UW undergraduates to extend their learning beyond the classroom. 

The half-time Student Engagement Coordinator will be an integral member of the Carlson Center team. This position will advise students regarding opportunities to engage in service events and co-curricular volunteer work. This position will have primary responsibility for developing and implementing large scale events that engage students, faculty, staff and alumni in service and provide venues for celebrating engagement and leadership. In addition, this position will be responsible for strategically planning and implementing the Carlson Center’s communications strategy in order to recruit and engage students in service opportunities. Specific Responsibilities include:

  • ·         Recruit and advise students regarding one-day and episodic service opportunities
  • ·         Partner with other campus units to serve as a resource for students interested in co-curricular service opportunities
  • ·         Coordination of university-wide Days of Service including the Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service
  • ·         Coordination and support for the Spring Celebration of Service and Leadership, a collaborative event that provides a venue for students to celebrate their service and leadership activities while demonstrating what they have learned
  • ·         Development and implementation of a comprehensive communications strategy for the Carlson Center and all Carlson Center led initiatives
  • ·         This position is located within the Center for Experiential Learning and Diversity and participates in center activities such as events, meetings and other opportunities

 

REQUIREMENTS:

• Baccalaureate degree in Social Sciences or related field from an accredited institution is required. 
• 2 years of professional experience 
• Excellent oral and written communication skills, particularly the ability to work with multiple constituencies
• Demonstrated ability to take initiative, follow through on independent projects, and balance multiple priorities with a strong attention to detail
• Ability to build and maintain strong relationships with university students, Carlson Center partners (such as United Way of King County), and university faculty and staff
• Commitment to Carlson Leadership & Public Service Center’s values and fundamental mission to engage undergraduates in understanding, building and improving our communities
• Demonstrated ability to use basic and some advanced functions of Windows operating systems, Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Power Point, and Outlook), the internet and web-based forms

Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except where there are legal requirements such as license/certification/registration.

Salary is commensurate with education and experience.

Apply For Visions ’14!

We are looking for undergraduate and graduate students interested in applying for the UW Sea-Going Research and Discovery course (OCEAN 411), which will include a sea-going component from July to October 2014. The VISIONS ‘14 expedition will take place aboard the 274-foot global-class Research VesselThomas G. Thompson and will utilize the state-of-the-art underwater robotic vehicle called ROPOS. We will be working at an active submarine volcano and reaching depths of 9000 ft beneath the ocean’s surface.

As a member of this oceanographic expedition and class, you will be taking part in the installation of the first U.S. high-power and high-bandwidth regional cabled ocean observatory, which is called the Regional Scale Nodes (RSN). The observatory’s design, installation, and early operations are being led by the University of Washington. The RSN is part of the National Science Foundation’s Ocean Observatories Initiative, which is constructing a network of instruments, undersea-cabled observatories, and instrumented moorings that span the Western Hemisphere. The RSN component will connect state-of-the-art instruments and full water-column moorings to cable networks permanently installed across the Juan de Fuca tectonic plate off the coasts of Washington and Oregon. Course and expedition participants will be part of truly groundbreaking work that is transforming science and exploration in the world’s oceans.

VISIONS’14 will take place July 13 to October 3, 2014. There will be numerous 2- to 3-week legs in which you will be able to participate over the 83-day expedition. The exact dates of each leg will be posted here as soon as possible.

The Audubon Center at Seward Park Scholarship

The Audubon Center at Seward Park is offering a scholarship to a Master Urban Naturalist Certification course in exchange for 25 hours of volunteer service teaching youth and family nature programs.

$500 Award amount – Master Urban Naturalist Certification Course

Tuesdays or Thursdays: February 20—May 15

Ages 18 and older

This three month Master Urban Naturalist certification course is for adults over 18 looking to make an impact in their community as an educator for youth and adults.  Included are workshops on natural history, ornithology, group facilitation and youth work, guiding nature walks, childhood development, ecology and restoration and botany.  For this training you choose one of three tracks:

– Pre-K & Early Childhood Education

– Youth Development and Teen Leadership

– Ecology, Restoration and Service Learning

Each track requires a minimum of 5 classes over 4 months and includes shadowing or co-facilitating one or more relevant Audubon programs. An applicant may either pay the $500 course tuition orreceive a scholarship for the full amount in exchange for 25 hours of volunteer service to be completed in 2014.
