[job]: Program Naturalist, Nature Vision

Nature Vision is a non-profit environmental education organization founded in 2003 based in Woodinville, WA. Our mission is to foster citizen appreciation and stewardship of our environment through integration of school, community, and nature education.  Nature Vision (NV) serves ~43,000 participants annually. In 2010, the NV team received the Michael Mercer Water Conservation Educator Awardwith partners for our work on the Sammamish Watershed Festival.  NV was also honored with the 2007-2008 Environmental Education Association of Washington’s (EEAW) Award for Organizational Excellence. 

Position description

Duties include but are not limited to: 

·         Presenting environmental education and outreach programs to schools and other groups in classrooms and outdoor settings from the Nature Vision menu of programs.  Training is provided. 

·         Prep and clean-up of materials for presentations.

·         Driving to presentation sites driving across King and Snohomish County to reach schools and other sites registered for programs.

·         Special projects as assigned.

Start Date:  September 2013

Hours: Part-time, 7-20 hours/week, varies according to registration and availability   

Salary: $15-$16/hour                                                                          

Minimum Qualifications: Bachelor’s degree and experience in Environmental Education, Interpretation, Science Education, Environmental Science or a related field.  Applicant must have a combination of education and experience which demonstrates the ability to work in the field and in classrooms with groups of students.  Must be a US Citizen and able to read, speak, and write the English language clearly. Must pass a WA State Patrol criminal records check.

Special Requirements: Must possess a valid Washington State Drivers’ License and own vehicle to drive to field sites. Mileage is reimbursed at federal rate.  May need to occasionally lift objects up to 50 lbs.

AmeriCorps Service position available at IslandWood’s Homewaters location in Seattle

This fulltime, 10 ½ month opportunity begins on September 1, 2013 and runs thru July 15, 2014.

About IslandWood’s Homewaters program
IslandWood’s Homewaters Program is based in Seattle.  It primarily provides outdoor environmental education programs to Seattle Public Schools in their schoolyard or nearby park. Homewaters works in close collaboration with the district to provide programs that tie directly to the science units being taught in the schools. Through guided, hands-on field investigations, Homewaters helps students to discover the interdependence of people and nature in the heart of their city. The three outreach programs currently provided by Homewaters are funded by grants and provided free of charge to the schools.

About the service position
The AmeriCorps Service Member will be serving in close collaboration with the Homewaters Program Coordinator & Lead Educator to support, deliver, and assess Homewater’s programs.  A majority of the Service Members time will be focused on supporting and teaching the creek-based Land and Water Field Study program and helping to implement new pre and post lessons for the program.  The Service Member will spearhead recruiting, scheduling and support of program volunteers and will assist with their training. The service member will also be collating assessment data to determine program outcomes and improve program quality.

Qualifications required for this position:
•       Detail-oriented, organized, flexible
•       High-level teaching / communication skills
•       Knowledge of best practices in environmental and sustainability education
•       Comfort with and interested in gaining more experience in the formal education system
•       Experience communicating with classroom teachers
•       Experience with upper elementary grade students through middle school students in field and project-based programming
•       Driver’s license and regular access to a vehicle to visit schools and sites throughout the Greater Seattle Area
•       Lift kits of 20-30 pounds
•       Walk on uneven outdoor terrain

About IslandWood’s Brightwater program
IslandWood’s programs at Brightwater consist of school day programs, community and family programs, summer programs, and adult and teacher workshops.  IslandWood offers three different school day programs (for 3rd-8th graders);  Community and family programs and Summer day programs.  IslandWood delivers professional development workshops for teachers, as well, supporting their in-class curriculum and helping to extend the learning to the natural world.  IslandWood’s programs at the Brightwater Center are a partnership between IslandWood (an environmental education nonprofit) and King County (the owners of the building, the facilities, and the wastewater treatment plant).

About the service position
The AmeriCorps Service Member will collaborate with the Brightwater Program staff to implement our second year of IslandWood school programs at the Brightwater Center in Woodinville.  The Americorps Service Member’s primary responsibility is to teach elementary and middle school day programs at the Brightwater Center and ensure their ongoing quality.  The member will be responsible for the material management, follow-up with teachers and classrooms, and assist with training of new IslandWood Educators.  In addition to serving with the school day programs, the member will be the primary contact person for all community events at the Brightwater Center (ranging from 2-hour programs for small groups, to 4-hour events that attract up to 75 people).  This will also include marketing, program planning, logistics, and implementation.  The member will further spearhead the recruitment and training of volunteers for delivery of these community programs as needed.  In the summer, the Americorps member will focus on leading summer day programs for students from K-6th grade.
