SEA Semester is the only program in the world that brings students to the deep ocean under sail to study the science and culture of the sea. SEA offers a unique combination of off-campus adventure, serious research, and personal challenge.  
 

  • Year-round opportunities for students from all majors
  • 12-weeks, 17 credits, 3,000 miles under sail.
  • 6 weeks in the world-renowned scientific community of Woods Hole, MA, taking classes and preparing for an open-ocean sailing voyage
  • 6 weeks aboard a 134’ oceanographic research sailing vessels in the North Atlantic, Caribbean, North Pacific, or French Polynesia.

The Daily published an article on January 23 called The Little Engine that Could. The article focuses on the work of Fumio Ohuchi, professor and associate chair of material science and engineering, and John Slough, associate research professor and director of research at MSNW. The two are part of the team working at the UW and the MSNW fusion lab in Redmond, Wash., building what they call a fusion engine.

The fusion engine converts fusion energy directly to electricity like a motor engine, which would make it the most efficient source of energy. A fusion reaction releases a remarkable amount of energy by combining two hydrogen isotopes. If people can harness fusion power, it would mean almost limitless, clean-burning fuel, eliminating our need for things like coal, oil, and natural gas, which account for more than 70 percent of U.S. electricity generation.

Sea Mar recognizes students from farm worker families often face enormous obstacles in completing their education. Many work after school and during summers to help their families meet daily living expenses, and many struggle to overcome language and cultural barriers.

Sea Mar Community Health Centers annually awards $1,000 scholarships to students from seasonal or migrant farm worker families in Washington State. Students interested in attending a university, community college, or technical school are eligible to apply (high school seniors and undergraduate students). Scholarship funds can be used for college-related expenses such as tuition, books, housing, food, etc.

Description: The goal of Ocean Career Day is to educate young people about career, education and volunteer opportunities available in the field of marine science. With students from over 200 local schools invited to attend, Ocean Career Day is a great way to recruit and inspire the next generation of marine scientists, conservationists and marine educators. We invite you to share your school’s programs with those interested in careers in marine science, biology and more. Science-, research-, educational-, recreational-, and tourism-oriented organizations will be in attendance as well as volunteer organizations, colleges and universities. 

The events include presentations throughout the day about career paths and current work, along with Education Panels and small organization table presentations to explore!

Summary: The Assistant Park Ranger I is a part time 1040 position offered through the Bellevue Parks & Community Services Department Natural Resource Division.  This position is a front line customer service position directly in contact with the public on a daily basis.  The Assistant Park Ranger I provides environmental program development and delivery, patrolling, marketing, staffing and environmental interpretive support.  The position reports to the Park Ranger.

Hours: Part-time and on the weekends.

Salary: Starting minimum $14.74 per hour

Responsibilities:

  • Provide Program assistance to the Park Ranger.
  • Design and implement adult and family environmental education and interpretive programs for the Lewis Creek Visitor Center.
  • Provide outreach to the public and communicate park rules and policies to users in a professional and courteous manner. 
  • Provide support at other Natural Resource facilities, Visitor Centers and during events, as needed.  Duties include facility staffing, responding to customer inquiries, and program delivery.  Tasks may include opening/closing facilities, answering phones, greeting visitors, conducting surveys, monitoring rentals, working on assigned projects and keeping a neat and clean Visitor Center.
  • Creating and coordinating interpretive displays and brochures.
  • Position may involve leading weekly canoe tours during summer months.
  • Conduct park patrol duties including park/trail patrols, providing customer service to park patrons, educating patrons regarding park rules and regulations, maintaining visitation and patrol logs, and conducting park/trail inspections.
  • The position may also provide administrative support and programming assistance to other Parks Department and Natural Resource Division program areas as needed.
