I specialize in remote sensing and earth observation (EO) at the School of Environmental and Forest Sciences (SEFS) within the College of the Environment at the University of Washington, Seattle. I also have the pleasure of serving as the Director for both the Program on the Environment (PoE) and the Precision Forestry Cooperative (PFC), where my Remote Sensing and Geospatial Analysis laboratory (RSGAL) is housed. At RSGAL, our goal is to understand the multiscale and multidimensional dynamics of landscapes using hyper-resolution remote sensing. We develop essential methods to analyze hyper-resolution remotely sensed data by exploring spatial, temporal, and spectral domains. We’re also committed to enhancing the retention and success of underrepresented minorities in the geosciences.

Additionally, I’m affiliated with the UW Interdisciplinary PhD Program and the UW Department of Geography. I earned my PhD in Remote Sensing and GIS from the University of Kansas, my Master’s in Remote Sensing from the University of Calgary, and my Bachelor’s in Environmental Studies (ES) from the University of Waterloo. It is my ES education that has most impacted passion to understand the ecological and human domains of our environment. Moreover, my life, research and work have taken me around the globe, from arriving in North America as a political refugee to my research and experientially based teaching in Yellowstone National Park and collaborations spanning Europe, Africa, South America, and Asia. My interdisciplinary work has been sponsored by federal agencies (NSF, NASA) public sector agencies USDA Forest Service, WA DNR) and no profit agencies (TNC).

If you’re interested in my research and teaching, you might enjoy watching my SEFS Seminars Talk or my teaching demo, where you’ll also see how I’ve integrated climate justice into my Digital Earth course. Finally, feel free to explore the Impacts of Climate Change on the Pacific Northwest workshop I offer.
