Course Planning for Environmental Studies Majors
The Environmental Studies major is composed of three main groups of requirements: Core Courses, Integrating Disciplines, and Capstone Experience. We are a minimum requirements major so it is important to prioritize taking ENVIR 100 along with any 200-level or higher course to officially declare the ENVIR major. It is also recommended that students explore taking several Integrating Disciplines courses early in their academic plan, as they will also satisfy many General Education requirements. For help with course planning, view or print our Core and Capstone Progress Map!
Core Courses
Note: ENVIR 301 also satisfies Reasoning and ENVIR 302 also satisfies Writing General Education requirements!
- ENVIR 100 – Introduction to Environmental Studies (NSc or SSc, DIV)
- ENVIR 101 – Orientation to Environmental Studies
- ENVIR 301 – Research Methods for Environmental Studies (NSc, RSN)
- ENVIR 302 – Communication for Environmental Studies (A&H or SSc, W)
- ENVIR 401 – Analysis of Environmental Cases (SSc or NSc)
Integrating Disciplines
One pre-approved course must be taken from each of the 8 disciplines, and at least 2 must be at the 300- and/or 400-level. Note: Most all of the Integrating Disciplines courses not only satisfy General Education requirements but may additionally be used to explore interest in a minor or double major!

Capstone Experience
The Capstone Experience is a three-quarter long series of courses: ENVIR 490, ENVIR 491, and ENVIR 492. Being eligible to start ENVIR 490, which is only offered in the Autumn and Spring, depends on well-timed progress in Core Courses. Note: ENVIR 492 also satisfies Writing General Education requirement!
- ENVIR 490 – Environmental Studies Capstone: Preparation
- ENVIR 491 – Environmental Studies Capstone: Internship and Research
- ENVIR 492 – Environmental Studies Capstone: Synthesis and Communication (W)
It is recommended that students meet with an ENVIR academic advisor early in their academic experience to explore course planning options and discover customized pathways that support post-graduation goals!
