Learning Contract

Students participating in an internship, project, or research opportunity outside of classes are sometimes able to earn academic credit for these experiences. All experiential learning credits must have a Learning Contract that is completed in partnership with an ENVIR faculty sponsor. Review the different types of experiential learning below to decide which is right for you and access the Learning Contract.

Internships: ENVIR 350

Internships are a great way to connect with local, national, or global communities and deepen your understanding of a specific job pathway and career sector. Internships do not have to occur during the summer and do not have to be located in Seattle. Students are required to find an ENVIR faculty member to sponsor these credits, and an additional section of the Learning Contract must be completed with the internship site supervisor.

Independent Study: ENVIR 498

Independent study credits allow students to pursue topics and fields of concentration connected to their major and areas of interest. Independent study projects are conducted under the supervision of an environmental studies faculty member, who will help design and guide the topic of the study and develop methods of assessment for the student.

Undergraduate Research: ENVIR 499

Undergraduate research provides a great opportunity to prepare for research-related career pathways and graduate study, or for students to explore if research is fulfilling and enjoyable for them! Research experiences can help hone practical skills in lab and field work, evaluation of scientific journal articles, and more. Research credits must be conducted under the supervision of an ENVIR faculty member.

Completing the Learning Contract

  1. View the PDF linked below to ensure you are aware of all requirements for gaining academic credit through your chosen experiential learning opportunity. Requirements will vary slightly depending on which credits you are requesting (350, 498, or 499).
  2. Identify a faculty member within the Program on the Environment who is willing to supervise your project, research, or internship. Ideally, the chosen faculty member specializes in or is knowledgeable about your intended area of study.
  3. Complete the Learning Contract with support from your supervising faculty member, and email the signed document to enviradv@uw.edu. Note that the contract will require a signature from both you and your faculty supervisor, and it must be submitted no later than the 5th day of the quarter in which the credits will be completed.
