The goal is to discover the universe of cleantech solutions to our most pressing environmental challenges and to raise awareness of how you might be part of that solution.  You’ll form teams around problems you identify, and present your solutions to the class.  Although not required, teams are invited to compete in the UW Environmental Innovation Challenge April 2, 2015.

The seminar consists of a selection of required readings and a series of industry experts who will speak on a specific cleantech topic. You will work in teams to present a proposed solution to an environmental problem. The final deliverable for the class is a 5-10 minute presentation.

Course topics will include:

  • Environmental challenges and opportunities linked to cleantech.
  • How to translate an idea into an actual device/product/company 
  • Market assessment (who would be the customer for this product or service?)

Sustainable Seattle has a workshop coming up with sustainability data tracking experts from Vulcan, Scope 5, CH2M Hill and GeoEngineers. The Business School has just opened UW’s first competitive minor, the Entrepreneurship Minor. The deadline to apply for the winter quarter is October 25th, and another date will be announced in spring for fall admission.

Students who pursue the minor are creative and motivated, and looking for ways to apply the knowledge they’ve gained from their major to an entrepreneurial endeavor.  Open to all non-business undergraduates, this 31-credit competitive minor offers students the opportunity to leverage their unique talents, as well as their new-found business knowledge, to achieve their start-up goals.

Sustainability Research Internship

Sustainable Business Consulting (SBC) is a Seattle-based consulting firm whose goal is to lead and inspire business to change the world.

We are looking for an independent, hard-working, motivated intern with a “can do” attitude who wants to learn about business & sustainability. We are in the process of helping build out online learnings on sustainability and area looking for a highly motivated individual to help us with the following:

Internship Job Responsibilities include:

 Conducting in-depth research and analyses on a variety of key sustainability issues

 Researching case studies, readings, and articles around Sustainability and how it relates to 8 different course criteria

 Support the creation of powerpoint presentations and supporting in-person speaking engagements

 General Office Management

 Perform various administrative tasks as needed

Qualifications

 Proven research experience

 Excellent writing, editing and proofreading skills

 Business/Executive summary writing experience. Not just academic.

 Demonstrated interest in sustainability as it applies to business management

 Proficient in MS Office suite and PowerPoint, Excel skills necessary

 Quick learner, willingness to take on any task (e.g. data entry, answering phones, whatever is needed)

 Solid work ethic, positive attitude, high standard of professionalism

Timeframe and Compensation

This internship is intended for college or recently graduated students who will be with us 18-20 hours per week for 4 months. Hours and workdays are flexible, but the intern must work in the office 2 days/week, with the 3rd day working remotely. We can work with you and your advisor to ensure you receive college credit for the internship if desired. The position runs from early August until mid-December.

Starts Immediately

The position is compensated at $12.50/hour. Sustainable Business Consulting is committed to teaching you about sustainable business and supporting your career development. UW is offering Certificate Programs in several topics that UW undergraduates can take as part of their normal credit load this summer. These Certificates consist of two to four courses and will give a good foundation in the various subjects listed below. The Summer Certificate in Business Essentials may be of special interest to Program on the Environment students because it provides:

·         Opportunity to cover the major business pillars of knowledge in one summer

·         Integrated curriculum with capstone business plan project, unique among UW business courses

·         Ten, 6 of which are Individual & Society Area of Knowledge (I&S)

·         Interaction with students from diverse perspectives since it is open to any major (except business majors)

·         Tuesday/Thursday schedule which fits well with other MWF courses

·         Access to industry professionals who now have adjunct or lecturer appointments with Foster School of Business
