Capstone Project Updates

With many students’ capstone internships currently wrapping
up, I would like to share some information about what are students have been up
to the last couple of months!

Jesse Barr– Jesse has been working with the City of
Vancouver’s Water Resources Education Center and high school students to build
a recycled soda bottle greenhouse. Jesse is trying to demonstrate some
innovative ways to deal with pollution, and to educate the public about the
unbelievable amount of plastic that enters landfills and our oceans.

Aaron Elefson – Aaron is working at the EPA Region 10
offices with a team focused on the remediation of the Black Butte Superfund
Site. The site is in Oregon and is home to an abandoned mercury mine that
continues to be a source of contamination for the downstream reservoir where
methyl mercury is absorbed by the resident fish. Aaron has been working with
his site supervisor to narrow down the potential areas the methylating bacteria
could be found.

Ryan Cun – Ryan has been working with the Wilderness Inner-city
Leadership Development (WILD) youth program. WILD is a non-profit organization
that is aimed to build youth leadership qualities like self-confidence, team
building skills, within the context of environmental education and civic
involvement. In a nutshell this program is all about educating youth and
equipping them with the tools they need for their future!

Thanks for all of your hard work! Great job PoE

[scholarship]: Jackson Munro Public Service Fellowship

awards range from 2500-4500 dollars for two quarters of engagement with projects with government or nonprofit organizations in winter and spring 2015 (remind you of anything? hmm…?) -joe

The Jackson Munro Public Service Fellowship (formerly the Sterling and Gene Munro Public Service Fellowship) encourages a life-long commitment to public service by providing outstanding undergraduates with the opportunity to explore their potential through service and leadership in the community.

Jackson Munro Public Service Fellows are selected based on the strength of a public service project proposed in collaboration with a public sector (non-profit or governmental) organization.

Factors influencing the selection of Munro Public Service Fellows include:

· Historical commitment to and involvement with community engagement activities
· Depth of partnership/relationship with proposed public sector partner
· Scope and impact of proposed work during the Fellowship
· Potentially sustainability of proposed project, how will the organization sustain this work at the end of your Fellowship?
· Connection between proposed project, academic studies, and professional/educational goals and objectives

Made possible through the support of the Henry M. Jackson Foundation, the Fellowship is named for late Senator Henry M. “Scoop” Jackson, S. Sterling Munro, Jr., the former top aide to Senator Jackson and Administrator of the Bonneville Power Administration, and Gene Munro, a lifelong advocate for public service and the wife of S. Sterling Munro Jr.

Environmental Studies Majors in the News

We have some pretty amazing students in this major. Two of them have recently been in the news!

Angela Feng is a senior major in Environmental Studies and an active leader in both the SAGE club and the UW Earth Club. She is at the moment literally the ‘poster child’ of the College of the Environment with a front page profile. Read more about her, and what she shares in common with Macklemore here.
Alexa Ramos is another senior in our major who worked on wetlands mitigation at Paine Field in Mukilteo over the summer for her Capstone project. Read her profile in the latest newsletter from Paine Field here.

Congrats to Angela and Alexa for profile on your great work!

Have you ever wondered what it is like to be a bird?

2014 Environmental Leadership Scholarship recipient Sophia Winkler-Schor traveled to the Peruvian Amazon for her Capstone Project this past summer. Check out her work with The Wild Forests and Fauna (WFF). In the video you will experience our journey deep into the jungle, and see incredible, ‘drone’s-eye views’ soaring 300ft above the tropical rainforest!

To see more awesome adventures Like WFF on Facebook! www.facebook.com/Wildff

The Environmental Leadership Scholarships are two, merit-based based scholarships awarded annually to Environmental Studies majors at the UW Program on the Environment. Applications are accepted once a year in May for the following Autumn quarter. Contact Joe Kobayashi at jkob@uw.edu for more information.
