Internship Title: Green Laboratory Certification Coordinator

Internship Description: The Green Laboratory Program provides resources and guidance for laboratories on campus to implement sustainable practices, including a certification program to recognize laboratories that decrease the University’s environmental impact in alignment with the UW Environmental Policy statement and the Climate Action Plan goals.

Internship / Learning Goals:

1. Gain hands on experience in project management, program development, collaboration, networking, communications, marketing, and development of

evaluative and educational materials under the direction of the Program Supervisor.

2.  Learn how to effectively communicate with a variety of stakeholders and navigate through the complex structure of the University

3.  Learn how to incentivize sustainable behaviors within a laboratory setting

4.  Learn more about sustainability at the University through knowledge discovery

The expected outcomes of this internship are:

1.  Continue to promote and expand the Green Laboratory Program by:

      a. Certifying labs and offering consultation services to help labs implement sustainable practices

      b. Working to secure sponsorship support for the program

      c. Creating and administering department and college-wide competitions

2.  Evaluate the certification program effectiveness, identify areas of improvement for the process of certification, and work with the Green Laboratory Advisory Committee to address challenges and opportunities for the Green Laboratory Program.

3.  Continue to share best practices for greening labs with higher education institutions, and identify areas of program improvement based on best practices from other institutions.

4.  Achieve reductions in energy use, water use, greenhouse gas emissions, and waste generated on campus in laboratories

5.  Report measurable metrics such as:

      a. Number of laboratories applying for certification (Overall Total)

      b. Number of laboratories certified as green laboratories (Total and at each level of certification)

Native Plant Nursery Internships

Interested in horticulture, communications, or construction? The UW student chapter of the Society for Ecological Restoration (SER-UW) is looking for two interns this Fall quarter to help grow their native plant nursery. The two available positions are for:

A​ Building Projects Intern to help construct rolling sidewalls, a potting bench, plant construction tables and​ an irrigation system.

A Communications Intern to help develop an advertising strategy to increase volunteer involvement, create a website design, develop online inventory, advertise work parties, and increase the club’s social media presence.

Interns will also receive UW credit for their work (ESRM 399).

Position Summary

The Video Production Intern will support the Executive Producer and Student Ambassador Leadership Team in producing a series of exceptionally creative and informative short films on green building. This is a part-time summer internship with flexible hours beginning June 20. Stipend of $3,000.  

 

Ideal candidate

We are looking for a brilliant young filmmaker (college age or budding professional, skilled technician and insightful artist) who is passionate about both video production and sustainability issues (people, profit and planet). We want to advance your career, create and post tons of really smart short videos, and engage you as a role model for our Student Ambassador Leadership Team.

Essential Role

1.       Work under the creative direction of the Executive Producer and Leadership Coach.

2.       Model, coordinate and coach younger students in pre and post production planning.

3.       Assist with scheduling, location scouting and project management as directed.

4.       Assist with storyboarding a series of 3-5 minute videos on green building.

5.       Shoot, capture exceptional audio, edit to live student-produced music, add titles and graphics.

6.       Organize and archive historical and current footage for future applications

7.       Capture footage of the production process to create a “making of” short.

8.       Post videos online to build the Sustainability Ambassadors Video Library.

Qualifications and Experience

1.       Link us to videos you’ve created so we can see your technical range and artistic sensibilities.

2.       You are passionate about local sustainability issues.

3.       You own a camera and audio equipment or have access to same.

4.       You happen to have your own professional editing software or access.

5.       You can advise our team on gear and software purchases.

6.       Your instincts for visual storytelling are powerful: composition, pace, lighting (we want an artist)

7.       You are experienced as both a shooter and editor (we want a technician)

8.       You are experienced with graphics (we want an animator)

9.       You are client-focused with excellent interpersonal skills (we want a team player)

10.    You are helpful, courteous, conscientious, with a sense of humor (personable)

11.    You have proven ability to meet deadlines (professional)

12.    You are willing to work a flexible schedule

13.    You find joy in detail, efficiency, logistics, quality, and working in a startup-like environment.

Part-time Position Available – Communications Coordinator

Puget Soundkeeper Alliance (Soundkeeper) seeks applicants for a Communications Coordinator position to assist with communications materials, marketing, media, electronic activism and public relations related to Soundkeeper’s work. The mission of Puget Soundkeeper Alliance is to protect and preserve Puget Sound by monitoring, cleaning up and preventing pollutants from entering its waters. This position will require work at the Soundkeeper office primarily with some work in the field. The applicant should have, or be able to arrange, reliable motor vehicle transportation. Required mileage and travel expenses are reimbursable. This is a part-time position with potential to become full-time in 2015 (or sooner if funding allows). Click for full position description.
