Want to build a health clinic & school for a poverty stricken community? Would you like to travel to beautiful Central America for Winter break? Join University of Washington’s Architecture Brigade to Honduras, December 14-23 to bring access to education & health care for youth in rural communities. The student run campus organization will have short meetings to plan, fundraise, learn Spanish, and educate each other about the communities we will be visiting.  Once on the ground, students will learn about building techniques, work side-by-side with community members, and meet the children who will be benefiting from the new school & health clinic. Nature Vision Internship

Summer 2012

Nature Vision is a non-profit environmental education organization founded in 2003 based in Woodinville, WA. Our mission is to foster citizen appreciation and stewardship of our environment through integration of school, community, and nature education.  Nature Vision (NV) serves over 44,000 students annually, more than many nature centers in our area. In 2010, the NV team  received the Michael Mercer Water Conservation Educator Award with partners for our work on the Sammamish Watershed Festival.  NV was also honored with the 2007-2008 Environmental Education Association of Washington’s (EEAW) Award for Organizational Excellence.

Internship Description

Duties include but are not limited to:

       • Aiding naturalists with presenting environmental education programs to:summer camps, schools, libraries, other groups from the Nature Vision menu of programs.  Training is provided.
       • Prep and clean-up of materials for camps and presentations
       • Office projects as needed by staff
Start Date:  6/18/12, negotiable depending on school needs

End Date:   8/31/12 or earlier depending on school needs

Hours: 15-30 a week, unpaid

Minimum Qualifications:

Working on bachelor’s degree or experience in Education, Interpretation, environmental science or a related field; combination of education and experience which demonstrates the ability to work in classrooms and in the field with groups of students.  Must be a US Citizen and able to read, speak, and write the English language clearly.

Special Requirements: Must possess a valid Washington State Drivers’ License and own vehicle to drive to field sites. May need to occasionally lift objects up to 50 lbs.

Unique and Exciting Opportunity to Serve as Peer Instructor with
Program on the Environment and UW International Educational Outreach

Seven upper-level undergraduates (juniors and seniors) are sought to
assist as peer mentors and teachers with students from Japan (Keio
University) from August 3-23rd. The course, “Humans and the
Environment in the Pacific Northwest,” will expose the visiting
students to topics ranging from forest ecology and land
use/transportation to ecological design and urban food sustainability.
Peer Instructors will assist in leading activities (including field
trips to places like the Cascade Mountains, Puget Sound, Carkeek Park
and activities like hiking and canoeing) as well as in mentoring
students on topic-based research projects. Students need to be
available at least part-time and preferably full-time during the
course period.

Benefits include:
Potential independent study credit and Capstone credits.
Enhancement of resume-building skills including teaching,
facilitating, and project management.
Practice communicating with international students and development of
friendships with Japanese youth.
Training and mentoring from course instructor.

[course] Tutoring and Mentorship in Higher Education

The University of Washington Academic Support Program is offering a service-learning seminar titled “EDUC 401: Tutoring and Mentorship in Higher Education” forWinter Quarter 2012.

This weekly seminar will introduce junior and senior students to a diverse range of tutoring, mentoring, and teaching methodologies. Students will have an opportunity to apply what they learn in class through tutoring and mentoring new transfer, freshman, and sophomore students who are transitioning socially, culturally, and academically to the University of Washington.

This is a great opportunity for seasoned students to give back to the University by sharing their knowledge and experience with new students who are working to become independent learners.

  • Begins 2nd week of Winter Quarter: January 9, 2011
  • Mondays from 3-4:20 PM (section F) or from 5:30-6:50PM (section G)
  •  Tutoring will take place on campus
  • Receive 2 credits for working with one student
  • Receive 3 credits for working with two students
  • A letter of recommendation will be available upon request after completion of the seminar
