About IslandWood’s Brightwater program
IslandWood’s programs at Brightwater consist of school day programs, community and family programs, summer programs, and adult and teacher workshops.  IslandWood offers three different school day programs (for 3rd-8th graders);  Community and family programs and Summer day programs.  IslandWood delivers professional development workshops for teachers, as well, supporting their in-class curriculum and helping to extend the learning to the natural world.  IslandWood’s programs at the Brightwater Center are a partnership between IslandWood (an environmental education nonprofit) and King County (the owners of the building, the facilities, and the wastewater treatment plant).

About the service position
The AmeriCorps Service Member will collaborate with the Brightwater Program staff to implement our second year of IslandWood school programs at the Brightwater Center in Woodinville.  The Americorps Service Member’s primary responsibility is to teach elementary and middle school day programs at the Brightwater Center and ensure their ongoing quality.  The member will be responsible for the material management, follow-up with teachers and classrooms, and assist with training of new IslandWood Educators.  In addition to serving with the school day programs, the member will be the primary contact person for all community events at the Brightwater Center (ranging from 2-hour programs for small groups, to 4-hour events that attract up to 75 people).  This will also include marketing, program planning, logistics, and implementation.  The member will further spearhead the recruitment and training of volunteers for delivery of these community programs as needed.  In the summer, the Americorps member will focus on leading summer day programs for students from K-6th grade.

Qualifications required for this position:
•        Detail-oriented, organized, flexible
•        High-level teaching / communication skills
•        Knowledge of best practices in environmental and sustainability education
•        Comfort with and interested in gaining more experience in the formal education system
•        Experience with upper elementary grade students through middle school students in field and project-based programming
•        Experience with community events and summer camps
•        Driver’s license and regular access to a vehicle to visit schools and sites throughout the Greater Seattle Area
•        Be prepared to lift kits of 20-25 pounds
•        Walk on uneven outdoor terrain

Nature Vision is a non-profit environmental education organization founded in 2003 based in Woodinville, WA. Our mission is to foster citizen appreciation and stewardship of our environment through integration of school, community, and nature education. Nature Vision (NV) serves over 44,000 students annually, more than many nature centers in our area. In 2010, the NV team received the Michael Mercer Water Conservation Educator Award with partners for our work on the Sammamish Watershed Festival. NV was also honored with the 2007-2008 Environmental Education Association of Washington’s (EEAW) Award for Organizational Excellence.

Internship description

Duties include but are not limited to:

 Aiding naturalists with presenting environmental education programs to: summer camps, schools, libraries, and other groups from the Nature Vision menu of programs. Training is provided. Most of programs will be in Redmond area.

 Prep and clean-up of materials for camps and presentations

 Office projects as needed by staff

Start Date: 6/17/13, negotiable depending on school needs

End Date: 8/30/13 or earlier depending on school needs

Hours: 15-30 a week, unpaid

Minimum Qualifications: Working on bachelor’s degree or experience in Education, Interpretation, Environmental Science or a related field; combination of education and experience which demonstrates the ability to work in the field and in classrooms with groups of students. Must be a US Citizen and able to read, speak, and write the English language clearly.

Special Requirements: Must possess a valid Washington State Drivers’ License and own vehicle to drive to field sites. May need to occasionally lift objects up to 50 lbs.

Job Title: Mammoth and Mono Lake Ranger District Internships

Dates: Summer/Fall 2013

Internship Includes: 

  • Free barracks style housing on the Mammoth Ranger District
  • A stipend of $33.55 per day worked is provided

Work Schedule: 40 Hours/Week. Work schedule TBD. Holiday and weekend work required.

General Duties: 

  • Assist with visitor information, interpretive programs, and resource protection
  • Assist and educate the visiting public on local and regional information, history, and activities
  • Perform wildlife management, black bear education, safety, and food storage compliance
  • Wilderness patrol on backcountry trails
  • Assist Recreation officer in the recreation program
  • Other duties as assigned

Qualifications – Internship Requirements:

  • 18 years or older
  • A valid driver’s license
  • Ability to hike on varied terrain at high elevations
  • Outgoing and intrepid enthusiasm when communicating with forest visitors
  • Interest or education in natural sciences and/or resource or recreation management or related field is strongly desired
  • Desire to be an integral member of the Mammoth and Mono Lake Ranger Districts team and represent the USDA Forest Service
  • Ability to successfully perform duties with little or no direct supervision, often in remote environments.
  • Maintain records of duties and results

Share your enthusiasm for science by serving as a Science Fair mentor for students at Bryant Elementary School! Mentors work with a group of 4-5 students, (4th and 5th graders) to design and carry out their scientific investigations. The role of the mentor is to ask questions and guide the group in its student-driven investigation. The mentor brings ideas and perspective to aid students in the development of manageable scientific experiments and interpretation of results. With guidance from the mentor, students prepare posters displaying their results and conclusions which will be exhibited at the Science Fair Poster Exhibition on March 28.

Commitment is 1.75 hours a week, 1:15-3:00PM, for 9 weeks

What is the Orca Bowl, you ask?

Orca Bowl is one of 25 regional components of the National Ocean Sciences Bowl (NOSB). Its Washington’s regional marine sciences bowl competition for high school students.

Why volunteer?

Orca Bowl is fun – and it can’t happen without its volunteers – that means YOU!

Your contribution enables high school students from the across the state to demonstrate their knowledge, meet ocean scientists and professionals   (you!) and enjoy the activities surrounding the regional competition at   the UW.

What do volunteers do?

You may sign up as a competition official or as a general volunteer. General volunteers assist with logistics up to and   on the day of the competition. For information on the roles of competition officials, go to:   http://www.nosb.org/volunteers/

ALL VOLUNTEERS must attend at least TWO training dates (see dates below) and be available on the day of the competition   February 23, 2013. New volunteers should attend one Orientation Session and at least one Training Session.

[job] – Summer Camp Teacher with Friends of the Issaquah Salmon Hatchery

Friends of the Issaquah Salmon Hatchery (FISH) is a nonprofit organization dedicated to retaining and improving the historic Issaquah Salmon Hatchery and promoting watershed stewardship through education.  This will be FISH’s 11th year offering day camps that teach about salmon, habitat and watershed  stewardship.  This year there are 3 weeks of camp for 6-8 year olds and one week for 9-11 year olds at the hatchery, one week for 9-11 year olds at Baxter Barn in Fall City, and a 3-half-day camp for preschoolers at the hatchery.  Camp for 6-11 year olds is called “Salmon Science Camp” and the preschool camp is known as “Little Fry Camp”.

Job Description: The Camp teacher supports FISH’s summer education program and Education Coordinator (EC). The teacher will work with the EC to deliver high quality, hands-on day camps centered on salmon and the ecology and watersheds of the Northwest.  Camps have a focus on science, but include arts, games and other elements.  Camp takes place indoors and outdoors at the Issaquah Salmon Hatchery in the Watershed Science Center and surrounding area; the week at Baxter Barn is 11 miles away in Fall City.


This is a 6.5-week temporary contract position.  Position includes training and set up for camp; camp begins on June 25, 2012 and concludes on August 10.  There is no camp week of July 2; that week will be used for planning, prep and set up.  Hours of work are Monday-Friday and will vary between 8:00 am and 4 pm; training and prep for camp will be 12 hours prior to June 25.  Total hours: during camp 40 hours per week, total term up to 268 hours.

Duties & Responsibilities:

·       Teach and co-teach interactive science and environmental education lessons, activities and games

·       Model and inspire respect and care for the environment

·       Supervise campers along with the EC, maintaining campers’ emotional and physical safety

·       Assist with camp logistics such as set up, clean up, and paperwork

·       Provide leadership and positive example to youth volunteer camp helpers

·       Communicate professionally with campers families, volunteer camp helpers and the EC

·       Maintain safe and organized indoor and outdoor camp environment.

 

Minimum Skills & Qualifications:

·       Two years experience working with elementary-aged children in environmental education

·       Knowledge of Pacific salmon and northwest ecology

·       Enjoy working in an outdoor environment

·       Must be at least 18 years of age and pass Washington State Patrol background check

·       CPR/1st Aid Certified

 

Preferred Abilities & Attributes:

·       Bachelors degree in natural sciences, education or related field

·       Desire and ability to develop and adapt lessons related to natural history and environmental science

·       Ability to be flexible, think on your feet and maintain a positive outlook even in stressful situations

·       Experience working with preschool-aged children

·       Group management skills
