Discussion of environmental health issues as they pertain to children’s health. Topics include historical perspective of public health research and policies directed at protecting children’s health, and emerging scientific and public health issues such as the risks and benefits of seafood consumption during pregnancy; the use of pesticides on food and in the home; air pollution and childhood asthma, and childhood injuries and the built environment.

The UW Environmental Health Research Experience Program (EHREP) is a funded, nine-week summer experience for undergraduates from any 2 or 4 year college or university with an interest in environmental health sciences. EHREP provides students with hands on experience in laboratories of leading researchers, introduces them to key environmental and occupational health issues while offering research exposure that will help them become competitive applicants for graduate study. Students will work full-time under the supervision of a faculty mentor and will receive a stipend of $5,200.

During the course of the internship, students are introduced to environmental health at the federal level through collaborative projects, experiential learning opportunities, environmental health presentations, journal clubs, field trips, brown bag lunches, and mentoring relationships at NCEH/ATSDR. Interns will be based at NCEH/ATSDR’s Chamblee Campus and will be paid a stipend of approximately $600 a week during the course of the program.

During the course of the internship, students are introduced to environmental health at the federal level through collaborative projects, experiential learning opportunities, individual environmental health presentations, journal clubs, field trips, brown bag lunches, and shadowing and mentoring relationships at CDC/ATSDR. Interns will be based at CDC/ATSDR’s Chamblee Campus and will be paid a stipend of approximately $600 a week during the course of the program.

1. US citizenship or Permanent Resident with a green card
2. Full time enrollment at a college or university as a rising junior or rising senior by fall 2012
3. Minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale
