[event]: Friday Harbor Labs Information Session

Friday Harbor Labs Information Session

Tuesday 1/17Tuesday 1/31 (rescheduled!)

4-5:30pm

Fishery Sciences Building 203

Directions: http://washington.edu/maps/?FSH

Learn how you can get involved with Friday Harbor Labs (FHL), UW’s world renowned marine station on San Juan Island. FHL faculty and former students will share their experiences, talk about their research, and answer questions. By participating in a FHL field and research-intensive marine science, social science, and/or humanities program, you will strengthen your resume, prepare for graduate school, and develop skills for a career in your field.  Any UW student can spend a quarter at FHL.

“Through field trips, lectures, and labs, everyone was able to get a really hands-on experience.  For basically all of the labs, we went out on the dock and collected samples of the things we were learning about in class.  That kind of relationship between the class and the field is something I have never experienced.  FHL is unique in that you are able to directly observe the things you are reading about.”

–Alex Ulmke, FHL Student Autumn 2011

[event] Art Exhibition: Particles on the Wall

Join Nick Thorp from WPSR and INND/Toxipedia for the opening reception of the latest installation of Particles on the Wall at the University of Washington in Seattle, in Odegaard Undergraduate Library.

The artist forum will begin at 7:30 in Room 220, January 6th. The exhibit will continue through March 29th.

The program provides a unique opportunity to hear from artists, poets, and scientists who have been inspired by Hanford to create a wide variety of art. From poetry readings, to discussions on the inspirations for their art and their impressions on Hanford, the panel of artists will shed a new and interesting light on the site that created the bomb dropped on Nagasaki and is now the most contaminated place in the Western Hemisphere.

[event] – “The Great Infection of the Sea” – Plastic Ocean

Captain Charles Moore
Scientist and Activist

Discusses “The Great Infection of the Sea”
detailed in his acclaimed new book Plastic Ocean

Date: January 25, 2012 Time: 7:30-9:00 PM Location: Town Hall Seattle
1119 8th Ave.
Seattle, WA Advance tickets are $5 at Brown Paper Tickets or 800/838-3006 and at the door beginning at 6:30 pm.

A prominent seafaring environmentalist and researcher shares his shocking discovery of the Great Pacific Garbage Patch in the Pacific Ocean, and inspires a fundamental rethinking of the Plastic Age and a growing global health crisis.

In the summer of 1997, Charles Moore set sail from Honolulu with the sole intention of returning home after competing in a trans-Pacific race. To get to California, he and his crew took a shortcut through the seldom-traversed North Pacific Subtropical Gyre, a vast “oceanic desert” where winds are slack and sailing ships languish. There, Moore realized his catamaran was surrounded by a “plastic soup.” He had stumbled upon the largest garbage dump on the planet – a spiral nebula where plastic outweighed zooplankton, the ocean’s food base, by a factor of six to one.

In this presentation Moore will discuss these observations, what they mean to our planet, and his book Plastic Ocean. A call to action as urgent as Rachel Carson’s seminal Silent Spring, Moore’s sobering revelations will be embraced by activists, concerned parents, and seafaring enthusiasts concerned about the deadly impact and implications of this man-made blight.

Presented as part of the Town Hall’s Science Lecture Series, with the Washington State Chapter of the Sierra Club, Pacific Science Center, and University Book Store. Series sponsored by Microsoft . Series media sponsorship provided by KPLU.

Additional sponsorship provided by Environment Washington, PCC, People for Puget Sound, Olympic Peninsula Surfrider, and Zero Waste.

Captain Moore is also speaking in Bellingham, Olympia, Port Angeles, and Tacoma.
