*Job* Youth Garden Educator at Interagency Academy for Seattle Tilth
The Youth Garden Educator will be responsible for providing and creating garden lesson plans and tasks for a crew of approximately 8 high school students. In addition to supervising and guiding the garden program sessions, the Educator will provide garden maintenance schedules, basic landscape maintenance techniques, harvesting, and possibly a program to market and sell the produce at a local farmer’s market. The Educator will work alongside YouthCare’s Interagency Career Coordinator, who will help provide supervision, training, direction, and ensure youth’s school retention. The Educator and the Coordinator will have time to plan together once per week.

Garden Hotline educators provide residents in Seattle and King County with information on plant care and selection, insect, animal and plant pests, IPM alternatives to pesticide use, weed management, urban food growing, soil building, soil biology, composting of yard debris and food scraps, use of compost and mulch, grass-cycling, natural lawn care, outdoor water conservation and home storm water management. Educators reach out to the public in Seattle and King County through educational workshops and presentations, garden tours, tabling at events, and other activities. Garden Hotline educators also provide service hours for phone, email and walk-in queries by residents Monday through Saturday, 9:00 am to 5:00 pm and may assist in the other educational activities of Seattle Tilth.

Farm and Nature Preschool Internship
Nature Vision is a non-profit environmental education organization that fosters appreciation and stewardship of our environment through integration of school and community for a sustainable future. We serve over 45,000 PreK-12th grade students annually with our inquiry-driven programming. In fall of 2014, we began running the Farm and Nature Preschool at Farrel-McWhirter Park in partnership with the City of Redmond. Nature Vision offers 3 exciting classes for preschoolers ranging in age from 3-5 years old. We are looking for a well-qualified Intern to assist with our Creative Play class, which runs T, Th from 9-11:30 am from January 27th-May 28, 2015. Internship description
Duties include but are not limited to:
• Assisting with children’s activities, indoors and out
• Assisting in developing preschool class curriculum as needed
• Being comfortable working with animals (i.e. farm animals) and children concurrently
• Assisting in managing classroom behavior to sustain a safe and effective learning environment for students
• Working with parents to maximize satisfaction.
• Assisting with creating and managing parent volunteer opportunities
• Bringing supplies back and forth to the Brightwater Center for the preschool as needed.
• Preparation and clean-up of materials and cleaning of preschool classrooms
• Other duties as assigned
Start Date: 1/27/15, negotiable depending on intern needs
End Date: 5/28/14 or earlier depending on intern needs
The program will focus on food and culture in the Hispanic world. It will serve students in Spanish, Nutritional Sciences, Jewish Studies, and Geography. It will also be advertised in the College of the Environment as a possible addition to the Food Studies Minor.

Washington state’s newest shellfish hatchery – and the federal government’s only such hatchery in the region – has been named after long-time University of Washington faculty member Ken Chew, a professor emeritus of aquatic and fishery sciences. The Kenneth K. Chew Center for Shellfish Research and Restoration is housed at the Manchester Research Station operated by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration near Port Orchard. Its opening coincides with a new 10-year plan to rebuild populations of native Olympia oysters in Puget Sound.

The UW Farm Education Coordinator
The UW Farm is looking to fill its Education Coordinator position. This volunteer position is open to all applicants and will require a weekly time commitment, with the ideal candidate in the Seattle area over the summer and into the 2014-15 academic year. Applicants don’t need to be expert farmers, just willing to learn and share their knowledge. This position will allow you to gain confidence teaching others and try out new ideas and teaching methods in a low-stress environment.
Responsibilities
The Coordinator will oversee volunteer “Educators” to work with children in an outdoor/farm environment with a focus on experiential education as part of the Bean Sprouts youth education program. Additionally, the Coordinator will plan tours for UW classes and connect students to food and agriculture at UW.
Qualifications
Applicants should be organized and reliable and able to work with other Farm Leaders and coordinate volunteers, run a calendar of events, and work with UW Faculty. Applicants must be able to pass a criminal background check.
