Autumn in Friday Harbor

Friday Harbor is a UW satellite campus nestled in the San Juan islands that offers an ideal, idyllic break from the city.  It’s a place where students can take a full-quarter’s worth of classes (12-17 credits) amidst beautiful woods and water.  Read, write, and explore the sea and the seashore through literature, creative writing, marine biology, and fisheries courses that take full advantage of the San Juan Island setting.  What better place to read Moby Dick and other works of seafaring literature, or to take a marine biology course where you can actually interact with the marine life you’re studying?  Whether you consider yourself a poet, prose writer, avid reader, marine biologist, or none of these (yet!), a quarter at Friday Harbor is an incredible experience unlike anything you’ve ever had – or may ever again get to have.

The program costs include EVERYTHING: tuition (12-17 credits), fees, materials and supplies, room, and three delicious meals a day.

Check out the website for details and testimonials from English majors who’ve attended in the past: http://depts.washington.edu/engl/cw/poetryfh13.php, or email Sierra Nelson (songsforsquid@gmail.com) for more information.  Hope to see you at the harbor!

“Through field trips, lectures, and labs, everyone was able to get a really hands-on experience. For basically all of the labs, we went out on the dock and collected samples of the things we were learning about in class. That kind of relationship between the class and the field is something I have never experienced. Friday Harbor Labs is unique in that you are able to directly observe the things you are reading about.”
–Alex Ulmke, FHL Student Autumn

Come to the information session to learn more about UW’s Friday Harbor Laboratories this Thursday, January 17th from 4:00-5:30PM in the Fishery Sciences Building, rm 203.

Looking to change things up for autumn quarter? Learn how you can get involved with Friday Harbor Labs (FHL), UW’s world renowned marine station on San Juan Island. FHL faculty and former students will share their experiences, talk about their research, and answer questions. FHL is an ideal place to spend a quarter and jump-start your career in the marine sciences, education, medicine, law and policy, poetry and more! All courses involve fieldwork, boats, laboratory work, and research mentorship from award-winning faculty. Any UW student can spend a quarter at FHL.

This Fall FHL is offering two unique programs:

1) The Marine Biology and Humanities Quarter will include English/CHID, creative writing, and marine biology courses.  This quarter is great for incoming freshman through seniors, no pre-requisite coursework required.

2) The Pelagic (Open Water) Ecosystem Research Apprenticeshipmonitors the sensitive waters in the San Juan Archipelago, and students design and work on independent research projects with faculty mentorship.  This 15 credit, fieldwork intensive program is great for sophomores through seniors.

I cannot emphasize enough how awesome Friday Harbor is. Being surrounded by students with similar interests really allowed me to come into my own.  Nobody made fun of you for talking about science and fish all day, and it was actually encouraged!
