[internship]: Event Support and Environmental Policy Internships with Pacific Northwest Economic Region (PNWER)

PNWER is seeking qualified students interested in working in a small, non-profit organization involved in Canada-US relations and public/private sector cooperation. Interns must be willing to work at a variety of activities, and have the ability to work independently and as part of a team.  Interns will have the opportunity to interface with regional legislators and industry leaders while gaining experience in a small office setting. 

Available Positions: Working Group and Event Support Internship (two positions available)

Invasive Species and Environment Policy Working Group Intern (one position available)

Duration: 1 quarter/semester (approximately 10 weeks); can be extended upon review. Fall internships are open until filled, starting immediately. 

Time/CreditInternships position is part-time, unpaid 15-20 hours per week. Internships may be eligible for school credit hours through your University. Please contact your University for more information.

Working Group and Event Support Internship (two positions available):

The 2012 Winter Meeting will host over 100 public and private sector business leaders in Coeur d’Alene, Idaho this November 14-17. Internships will balance meeting logistics with planning working group sessions such as Energy, Mining, Agriculture, Innovation, Workforce and others as needed. Interns will work closely with working group staff leads, and the co-chairs of each working group. Co-chairs are volunteer stakeholders, typically one legislator and one private sector lead. This intern will assist with event logistics including:

  • Manage correspondence with event attendees, sponsors and board members, such as producing and editing invitations, acknowledgement letters and follow-up letters
  • Assist in the coordination and support of PNWER’s working groups, including arranging conference calls, note-taking and agenda development
  • Design promotional materials, assemble packets and programs
  • Prepare collateral materials for events
  • Track current and potential sponsors using database website Salesforce.com
  • Manage event registrations, tracking invoicing and receipt of payment
  • Develop content for bi-weekly PNWER newsletter
  • Maintain and develop PNWER website
  • Assist in Other Projects as necessary

Invasive Species and Environment Policy Working Group Intern (one position available):

The Invasive Species and Environment Policy intern will assist with the Invasive Species and Environment working groups. This will include development of sessions for the 2012 Winter Meeting and tackling projects outlined in the 2012-2013 Invasive Species working group action plan. Duties may include:

  • Assisting in the coordination and support of the PNWER Invasive Species and Environment working groups, including arranging conference calls, note-taking, and agenda development
  • Researching regional invasive species resources
  • Researching invasive species and environmental policy, and maintaining a database
  • Developing monthly newsletters about PNWER and regional invasive species and environmental policy activities
  • Building, updating and managing a PNWER invasive species website and resource database
  • Developing reports on best practices in invasive species management in the region
  • Assist in other projects as necessary

[Internship]: COASST Internship in Conservation Biology and Marine Ecology

INTERNSHIP IN CONSERVATION BIOLOGY AND MARINE ECOLOGY

Want to gain valuable research experience? Contemplating working for a non-profit after graduation? Interested in marine conservation?

The Coastal Observation and Seabird Survey Team (COASST) is seeking 4-5 undergraduate students to assist with data entry and management, volunteer recruitment, tracking, training and communication for 2-3 college credits. Each credit requires 4 hours of work per week during fall quarter (September 24- December 7).

COASST is a citizen science project based at the University of Washington School of Aquatic and Fishery Sciences in partnership with local community and environmental organizations, and state and federal agencies. COASST volunteers collect data on beach-cast carcasses of marine birds on a monthly basis to establish the baseline, or ‘normal’ pattern of beached bird mortality on North Pacific beaches. Baselines are crucial for assessing the impacts of oil spills, fisheries, and climate change in the marine environment.

Job Description

 

Brief Position Description

Provide support to the Garden Hotline educators for their outreach events and conduct the inventory and assist with maintenance of our internal WIKI information database.

 

Brief Description of the Program

The Garden Hotline’s mission is to educate the public on ways to reduce waste, conserve water and other natural resources and minimize the use of chemicals. We offer individualized solutions to garden problems that are practical, safe, effective and natural. We are funded by Seattle Public Utilities, the Local Hazardous Waste Management Program in King County and the Saving Water Partnership.

 

Compensation: This is an unpaid internship, but can be done for school credit.

 

Time Commitment: The minimum commitment is 6 hours per week for 5 months with flexible scheduling.

 

Work Site: Work takes place at our office in room 100 of the Good Shepherd Center at 4649 Sunnyside Ave. N., Seattle, WA 98103.

 

Supervisor: Garden Hotline Program Coordinator

 

Training Requirements:  Participate in Seattle Tilth volunteer orientation.  Learn about administrative systems of Seattle Tilth before working independently on projects. Learn about outreach needs the WIKI database before working independently.

 

Responsibilities

§  Meet with supervisor on a regular basis to determine work goals and evaluate progress

§  Organize and prepare outreach supplies for events

§  Create and prepare outreach materials for use in the field; could include laminating signs, developing educational poster boards and stuffing mailers with educational materials.

§  Inventory and catalog our WIKI database

§  Assist with updating information as needed and assigned

§  Complete tasks as assigned by supervisor

 

Required Qualifications: 

§  Excellent organization and communication skills.

§  Excellent written communication skills.

§  Previous experience working with WIKI sites a plus. 

§  Proficiency with email, internet and Microsoft applications including Word and Excel.

§  Ability to follow direction, be self-directed and also work well as a member of a team.

§  Enthusiasm for the mission of Seattle Tilth.

§  A strong interest in non-profit work and community service. 

§  Available weekdays between the hours of 9 a.m. and 5 p.m.
