Apply to be a Peer TA for ENVIR 100 in spring 2012!

The Program on the Environment is currently accepting applications for 3 peer TA positions for the spring  quarter 2012 offering of ENVIR 100: Environmental Studies 100: Interdisciplinary Foundations. Peer TAs are registered undergraduate students with superior qualifications, who are trained in teaching skills, and serve in the same capacity as graduate student TAs. This is an exciting opportunity to gain valuable teaching experience while still completing your undergraduate degree. This would be especially valuable to students interested in environmental education or for students interested in applying to graduate school.

The total time commitment is anticipated to be approximately 15 hours per week. As a Peer TA, you will be responsible for attending the lecture for ENVIR 100 (3 hours per week), attending a weekly instructor meeting (approximately 1 hour per week), and managing one discussion section (2 hours per week). Additional tasks include: preparation for your discussion section; meeting with students during office hours, extra help or review sessions; and grading.

Peer TAs will earn academic credit (1-5 credits, variable, of ENVIR 498, graded).

Credits earned for being a peer TA can be applied to one of the following requirements for the major in Environmental Studies:
·         Policy and Decision-making perspectives
·         Departmental Honors requirement of ENVIR 497/498 (substitutes for both requirements)

2011 Collegiate Leaders in Environmental Health

 

CDC’s National Center for Environmental Health and the Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry (NCEH/ATSDR) are offering a 10-week summer internship program for students who are passionate about the environment, interested in human health, and curious about how they are linked. During the course of the internship, students are introduced to environmental health at the federal level through collaborative projects, experiential learning opportunities, individual environmental health presentations, journal clubs, field trips, brown bag lunches, and shadowing and mentoring relationships at CDC/ATSDR.  Interns will be based at CDC/ATSDR’s Chamblee Campus and will be paid a stipend of approximately $600 a week during the course of the program.

Description

The National Wildlife Federation is seeking a Wildlife and Climate Safeguards Intern to support NWF’s Climate Change Safeguards team, which focuses on climate change adaptation, wildlife protection and responsible renewable energy development. Major team initiatives include development of criteria and guidance for carrying out climate-smart conservation and wildlife-friendly approaches to wind and solar energy. The intern will also play a key role in the development of a new program that involves working with cities and towns to promote the use of nature-based solutions for climate change adaptation. The Safeguards team also is involved in policy and legislative work on issues such as State Wildlife Action Plans, endangered species, invasive species, land protection and management, and conservation funding.

Responsibilities:

  • Research, writing, and editing reports, newsletters, factsheets, and memos on wildlife, climate change, and natural resource conservation.
  • Legislative and policy work at the federal, state and local levels including tracking bills and administrative regulations/ rulemakings, distributing information to decision-makers in hard copy and e-mail, maintaining target database and policy information and occasionally attending lobby meetings.
  • Coalition building with partners, including attending coalition meetings, engaging NWF affiliates and partners, helping with lobby days and trainings, calling activists and like-minded organizations.
  • Logistical support in organizing meetings and other events, including arranging travel, taking minutes, and distributing notes and other materials.
  • Administrative duties as assigned.

Experience:

  • Bachelors degree or experience in natural resource management, conservation biology, or environmental policy/advocacy; interest in policy and legislative affairs desirable. 
  • Good expository writing skills;
  • Facility reviewing technical policy and/or scientific documents,
  • Excellent phone and interpersonal skills;
  • Ability to conduct independent research;
  • Computer literacy a must (MS Office suite and internet applications);
  • Graphic design or GIS skills are useful but not essential.

The College of the Environment presents the 2012 UW Environmental Career Fair to be held on Wednesday, February 15, 2012 from 11 a.m. – 3 p.m. in the MGH Commons.

Talk to representatives from environmental government agencies, non-profit organizations, and private sector companies.  Many will have internship and career opportunities.  No matter what stage of the environmental studies major you are at, all are encouraged to stop by.
