Who We Are

Stewardship Partners is a 501©(3) non-profit conservation organization that helps private landowners restore and preserve the natural landscapes of Washington State.  Our projects restore fish and wildlife habitat, improve water quality, protect open space, and “green up” the built environment while maintaining working landscapes of farms, forestland, and livable communities throughout the State.  We work with agricultural landowners to implement environmental practices and conduct habitat restoration projects while promoting a sustainable farming economy.

 

Internship Overview

Salmon-Safe certification is an emerging regional eco-label that recognizes agricultural practices that protect water quality, biodiversity, and habitat for fish and wildlife, particularly Northwest native salmon.  Stewardship Partners is collaborating with the Oregon-based program to recognize and promote Puget Sound farmers committed to environmental practices.   We are seeking a self-motivated, highly organized, outgoing, creative and enthusiastic intern to assist in educating the public about the Salmon-Safe program in support of Salmon-Safe certified farms.  The intern will be responsible for scheduling, setting-up, and staffing an information booth; organizing volunteers, developing educational materials; writing website and newsletter content; compiling and mailing information packets to prospective Salmon-Safe farms, and providing general program support as needed.  The candidate will be exposed to habitat restoration and conservation issues, sustainable agriculture, environmental certification and marketing, issues related to local/natural food systems, and non-profit management.  

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Schedule, set up and staff Salmon-Safe information booth at farmers markets, festivals, and other relevant events.
  • Create and organize Salmon-Safe display materials.
  • Recruit and manage additional volunteers to assist with staffing information booth.
  • Assist with organizing website content including writing briefs of Salmon-Safe certified farms and overview of habitat restoration projects.
  • Maintain and update informational materials including news articles, photo archive, etc.
  • Provide administrative support for the Salmon-Safe program (including filing, photocopying, and mailing information packets).

Minimum Requirements:

  • General background in environmental studies or related field with basic knowledge of salmon related issues and personal /professional interest in sustainable agriculture.
  • Strong communication skills (verbal and written), outgoing, positive attitude, attention to detail, and a desire to work both individually and within a team environment.
  • Willingness to work evenings and weekends. 
  • Creative design skills helpful

Dates:  May through November, 2011 (20 hrs/week)- (dates are negotiable)

Washington State Legislative Internship Program, Winter Quarter 2012
Open to Juniors and Seniors from ALL majors.  Applications for the program will be accepted in fall quarter 2011 (deadline TBA).

Program
Interns spend Winter Quarter working in Olympia as staff for members of the Washington State House of Representatives or Senate.  In addition to their office work, interns participate in weekly seminars and workshops.  The seminars include meeting with state officials, as well as panel discussions.  In the workshops, interns take part in a budget exercise, mock hearing, and mock floor debate.  They learn parliamentary procedure and how to write for the Legislature.  Additionally, interns have the opportunity to shadow an elected official or administrator of a state agency and learn about his/her job.

Compensation and Credit

Interns receive monthly compensation to offset the expenses associated with the internship and academic credit from the University of Washington.  During their internship, UW students will be enrolled in POL S 497 for 15 credits and will attend a seminar course taught by a UW faculty member.

[internship] Peer Instructor for UW summer course with Japanese students

A Summer 2011 internship!

I am recruiting students interested in a peer instructor role with a summer field course for 35 students from Keio University in Japan. The course is “Humans and the Environment in the Northwest Bioregion” and will run from 8/5 to 8/24.  Topics range from wildlife biology and restoration ecology, to urban sustainability and smart growth. You can register for independent study credits if desirable (either summer or fall quarter), but otherwise it is a volunteer internship as there is no pay available.

The course was created jointly by Program on the Environment and the International Educational Outreach Program in 2005, and I have taught the course most years since then.  Students from a variety of departments and majors have served as peers in the past. There is no specific coursework requirement to participate, just an interest in one of the course topics and environmental or international education in general.

Your role will be to help with small group work in the classroom (for communication skills and environmental content classes) and to help guide a single group of 5-7 students through their final project work.  You will be part of a team of 6 UW peer instructors. Ideally peers are available close to full-time during the course itself, plus a few hours/week in June and July for prep before the students arrive.  In the past we have been able to work around the schedules of students with summer quarter classes or part-time jobs.

INTERNSHIP IN CONSERVATION BIOLOGY AND MARINE ECOLOGY

Want to gain valuable research experience?Contemplating working for a non-profit after graduation? 

Interested in marine conservation?

The Coastal Observation and Seabird Survey Team (COASST) is seeking 3-4 undergraduate students to assist with data entry and management, volunteer recruitment, tracking, training and communication for 2-3 college credits.  Each credit requires 40 hours of internship to be completed during summer quarter.


COASST is a citizen science project based at the University of Washington School of Aquatic and Fishery Sciences in partnership with local community and environmental organizations, and state and federal agencies. COASST volunteers collect data on beach-cast carcasses of marine birds on a monthly basis to establish the baseline, or ‘normal’ pattern of beached bird mortality on North Pacific beaches. Baselines are crucial for assessing the impacts of oil spills, fisheries, and climate change in the marine environment.

This intern will work directly with the Seattle outreach coordinator and other staff to assist with all outreach and organizing duties in Seattle and possibly additional western Washington communities. The intern will organize, execute, and attend community projects and outreach events and will additionally help with day-to-day office work. The internship will be split by 30% community outreach work, 30% web based communication and environmental policy research, and 40% event planning and office projects. This is an excellent opportunity to learn about Washington/British Columbia conservation issues, gain community organizing and campaign experience, conduct grassroots activism and participate in innovative campaigns to protect wild lands and quality of life in the Northwest. A main focus will be on providing the intern with a quality educational and hands-on experience that prepares and empowers him/her to be an effective advocate for the unique Northwest landscape and wildlife.

About Conservation Northwest

Conservation Northwest connects and protects old-growth forests and large, intact wild areas from the Washington Coast to the BC Rockies to benefit people and wildlife. Since 1989 we have protected hundreds of thousands of acres of wildlife habitat around the state, linking the Washington Coast to the Cascades and the BC Rockies.

Today we are ensuring the region is wild enough to support wildlife, from wolves to grizzly bears to mountain caribou. We work with local communities on forest restoration, sustainable timber jobs, and wilderness protection. We help create safe passage and connectivity for wildlife, including those moving north and south across Interstate 90 in the Cascades, across the border with Canada, and east and west between the Cascades and the Selkirks range of the Rockies.

Conservation Northwest has recently made a renewed investment in engaging and activating our western Washington membership as well as creating additional organizational outreach opportunities and visibility in the Puget Sound region.

Internship Description

• Engage citizens in western Washington on conservation issues through public events, grassroots organizing techniques, and volunteer coordination
• Connect western Washington citizens and businesses to conservation campaigns through general outreach and event planning.
• Assist the outreach coordinator and volunteers with all organizing duties, including press events, turnout for events and hearings, and supervising volunteers and campaign activities as needed
• Help with database management, data entry, and other projects as needed
• Work closely with the Seattle outreach coordinator to create and implement fun and creative strategies to engage and activate Seattle residents in lands protection and wildlife issues.

Term of Position: Flexible, but 2 to 3 month commitment preferred, June through August

Work Schedule: 15-20 hours/week (includes some weekends and evenings)

Compensation and Benefits: A stipend is available. Intern will be given the opportunity to work directly with Conservation Northwest staff to develop meaningful and tangible work experience.

Minimum Qualifications: The ideal candidate for this position is outgoing and enthusiastic about working with people, has excellent communication and problem solving skills, interest in leveraging social media for conservation goals, and most importantly, a passion for protecting the Northwest’s wild lands, wildlife, and quality of life. Students with majors in the areas of environmental studies, political science, liberal arts, geography, communications, marketing, biology, and forestry are encouraged to apply.

Specific background requirements requested include:
• Familiarity with leading volunteers and organizing on environmental issues are helpful
• Excellent organizational, communication, and presentation skills
• Ability to multi-task and manage short and long-term deadlines
• Working knowledge of MS Outlook, Word, Excel and PowerPoint; databases, a plus
• Capacity to effectively work with diverse individuals and constituencies

Special Requirements: Ability to work a flexible schedule, including evenings and weekends as needed. Have a valid Washington Driver’s License, and be able to possibly travel throughout western Washington, sometimes on short notice.

Physical Demands: Intern regularly walks, bends, stoops, and climbs stairs. Must be able to lift and carry tabling materials, packages, and supplies up to 35 pounds. Offices and buildings are totally smoke-free.
