Position Summary

The Video Production Intern will support the Executive Producer and Student Ambassador Leadership Team in producing a series of exceptionally creative and informative short films on green building. This is a part-time summer internship with flexible hours beginning June 20. Stipend of $3,000.  

 

Ideal candidate

We are looking for a brilliant young filmmaker (college age or budding professional, skilled technician and insightful artist) who is passionate about both video production and sustainability issues (people, profit and planet). We want to advance your career, create and post tons of really smart short videos, and engage you as a role model for our Student Ambassador Leadership Team.

Essential Role

1.       Work under the creative direction of the Executive Producer and Leadership Coach.

2.       Model, coordinate and coach younger students in pre and post production planning.

3.       Assist with scheduling, location scouting and project management as directed.

4.       Assist with storyboarding a series of 3-5 minute videos on green building.

5.       Shoot, capture exceptional audio, edit to live student-produced music, add titles and graphics.

6.       Organize and archive historical and current footage for future applications

7.       Capture footage of the production process to create a “making of” short.

8.       Post videos online to build the Sustainability Ambassadors Video Library.

Qualifications and Experience

1.       Link us to videos you’ve created so we can see your technical range and artistic sensibilities.

2.       You are passionate about local sustainability issues.

3.       You own a camera and audio equipment or have access to same.

4.       You happen to have your own professional editing software or access.

5.       You can advise our team on gear and software purchases.

6.       Your instincts for visual storytelling are powerful: composition, pace, lighting (we want an artist)

7.       You are experienced as both a shooter and editor (we want a technician)

8.       You are experienced with graphics (we want an animator)

9.       You are client-focused with excellent interpersonal skills (we want a team player)

10.    You are helpful, courteous, conscientious, with a sense of humor (personable)

11.    You have proven ability to meet deadlines (professional)

12.    You are willing to work a flexible schedule

[internship] SCA in the Mt. Baker-Snoqualmie National Forest

The SCA has several internships available with the United States Forest Service within the Mt. Baker-Snoqualmie National Park. With start dates in June, we are actively seeking to fill these positions. 

Wilderness Ranger Intern 

June 22, 2014-September 14, 2014 Mount Baker-Snoqualmie National Forest, Everett, WA 

Successful candidates will serve as Wilderness Rangers patrolling trails in Wilderness areas and adjoining backcountry within the beautiful Mt. Baker-Snoqualmie National Forest in Washington state. Almost half of the Mt Baker-Snoqualmie National Forest is in designated Wilderness. Work will include maintaining backcountry campsites, signs, toilets and other facilities along trails, at wilderness lakes and other popular destinations in the Wilderness, 60%; assisting visitors and providing educational information about low impact (leave no trace) backcountry skills, 30%; monitoring conditions and collecting information needed by Wilderness managers,10%.

Developed and Dispersed Recreation Intern

Interns will spend the summer working within the Recreation division of the Mt. Baker-Snoqualmie National Forest. Interns will perform maintenance tasks at developed and dispersed recreation sites. Facilities maintenance is a necessary way to minimize sanitation impacts. Interns will also keep dispersed sites maintained in order to restore natural areas and reduce erosion. Assigned duties will include the following: -maintaining campgrounds, trailheads and dispersed recreation sites in the Skykomish Ranger District -visitor contact -collecting data -cleaning restrooms -removing litter

Wilderness Trails Intern 

June 23, 2014September 14, 2014Mount Baker-Snoqualmie National Forest, 

Skykomish, WA 

Serve as a member of the Skykomish Ranger District Trail Crew performing trail maintenance primarily within the Henry M. Jackson, Alpine Lakes, and Wild Sky Wilderness areas. We maintain a system of about 150 miles of trail, including a segment of the Pacific Crest Trail. Work includes logout with crosscut saw, repair of structures, tread and drainage maintenance, and brushing. May also include some construction of a trail relocation. First couple of weeks are day trips, including training on tool use, orientation, and trail maintenance training. Starting in July, the crew typically backpacks in about 5 miles and works out of this base camp during the work week. Bunkhouse provided for non-camping days in the town of Skykomish, WA. Position requires ability to work as part of a small crew and backpack, hike, and perform manual labor in a range of weather conditions in the Cascade mountains.

ECOSS Eco Events Steward Volunteer Internship

ECOSS, a non-profit environmental organization based in South Seattle, is seeking an intern to assist with planning and implementing Don’t Drip & Drip testing event on a volunteer basis.  ECOSS has a strong sustainable business program that has worked with thousands of small and medium-sized businesses in the area to prevent pollution and conserve resources in King County. Goal of position: Assist the Sustainable Business Associate with planning and implementing Don’t Drip & Drive testing events; assist with other events and activities as available and assigned

The Intern will assist ECOSS with outreach, planning and implementing Don’t Drip & Drive testing events, including advertising, organizing, phoning, coordination of materials and supplies, volunteer management, and other tasks associated with implementing large scale outreach events.  The intern will assist with pre-event activities, planning, and assisting with events.  For a description of the events, please see the following link: http://www.piercecountywa.org/ArchiveCenter/ViewFile/Item/2413

Time Commitment: 10-20 hours per week, based on need for planning and/or implementation of events, and between 6-8 events, between mid-June and September 30, 2014. Some flexibility in pre-event activities; schedule of events is in development phase. Some work may be able to be done remotely.  Early morning starts with up to 8 hours of work a day for a weekday event; at least one or more weekend events will also be held.

 Potential projects/ deliverables

  • Develop and communicate event information for staff, volunteers, and cooperating agencies and businesses prior to event
  • Assist Sustainable Business Associate with coordination of materials and supplies for events; assist with pick up and return of event materials
  • Disseminate advertisement for events to participating businesses to ensure employees knowledge of event and participation
  • Attend events and assist Sustainable Business Associate with event implementation
  • Assist with managing of volunteers providing training, guidance and support
  • Other administrative assistant activities as assigned

Required skills: 

  • Proficient with MS Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint)
  • Excellent communications skills; detail oriented
  • Team player; ability to coordinate with others and assist as needed
  • Self-starter; ability to work independently for the most part and problem solve or find outside resources to resolve technical issues

Preferred qualifications:

  • Interest in and knowledge of land use and/or environmental issues, especially water & drainage-related issues
  • Event development and implementation experience
  • Volunteer coordination experience
  • Having a car for collecting materials and other activities is highly suggested (mileage reimbursed at $0.56 per mile)

The Washington State Legislative Internship Program is having information sessions on the UW-Seattle campus on May 13th and 14th.  ALL majors are welcome to apply for this amazing internship opportunity. Information sessions will be held in Gowen 1A (the Olson room) at the following time:

        One of the country’s most highly regarded legislative internships, the program offers students the opportunity to gain professional, paid work experience and study the legislative process at the state level. Interns spend Winter quarter working in Olympia for members of the Washington State House of Representatives or Senate while earning academic credit from their schools.  As an intern, you will work alongside state officials and legislative staff to learn first-hand about public policy, build real-world professional skills, and serve the citizens of Washington State.
        Interns are placed with legislators’ offices and work in Olympia as full-time staff while the Legislature is in session (January through March or April every year).  In addition to their office work, interns take part in hands-on activities including training in legislative ethics, writing and research, a budget exercise, mock committee hearings and floor debate, and a job shadow at a state agency.  Interns also participate in seminars and workshops with state officials, policymakers, journalists, and lobbyists, offering networking opportunities and a global view of the political process.
        The Legislative Internship is a full time (40 hours per week) commitment and interns receive a financial stipend.  The internship must be taken for undergradaute academic credit.  Juniors and seniors of any age and any major are eligible to apply.

This course, BIOL 399D Biology Internship [SLN 10498 Term A] focuses on Environmental Interpretation, and offers hands-on training in practical interpretation and program delivery skills. For students who are interested in careers that interact with the public in the fields of natural and cultural history education, tourism and recreation, and communications. It combines both the theoretical foundations of the profession with practical skills in delivering quality interpretive programming to visitors.

Natural history interpretation can play a critical role in increasing public awareness about the environment. This interpretive course will  provide students with the skills and knowledge of communication methods that can promote environmental stewardship and instill a sense of wonder about the natural world by connecting diverse, multicultural audiences to resources and places.

The course touches on numerous topics including addressing different types of audiences, media choices, and communication techniques. A field trip is a part of this course.

Optional Certified Interpretive Guide (CIG): 

The course, in partnership with the National Association for Interpretation (NAI), offers professional certification that students can achieve in addition to course credit.
