This quarter, you will be hearing about the Cycle of Accountability by Lisa Remlinger. Lisa is the Outreach Director for the Environmental Priorities Coalition – a group of 24 environmental groups that work together to pass key bills during legislative session.

What are you doing this summer? Nourish International at the University of Washington offers students the opportunity to intern with community-based development organizations around the world. Nourish connects students with an interest in development and relevant skills to our partner organizations to further develop and implement community-driven projects for 5 weeks between July and September 2014. This summer, Nourish UW will be going to Uganda to partner with the Rural Health Care Foundation (RHCF). Nourish members will be working alongside community volunteers to build clean water systems that will directly impact over 1,500 rural peoples.

Internship Opportunity with Boeing!

Paid internship opportunity at Boeing with the Environmental Remediation team in Puget Sound!

  • Position is best suited for a graduate or senior intending to go to graduate school, but juniors may be considered as well
  • The start and duration of the internship is flexible, however it is preferred to keep the intern for as long as possible to give them the most possible exposure
  • The intern will have the opportunity to work in the field and office, as well as attend meetings with the regulatory agencies, contractors and consultants
  • Closing date for this opportunity is 2/5/2014
  • Resume should include previous work experience, especially if related to environmental remediation
  • Prospective interns should also include coursework related to environmental remediation such as hydrogeology, hydrology, environmental policy and regulations, and field work involving soil or water sampling

Coastal Ocean Systems and Sustainability Program

2014 Summer Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REU): Coastal Ocean Systems and Sustainability program

with the USC Wrigley Institute for Environmental Studies 

Program dates:  June 16 – August 8, 2014 (8 weeks).

This NSF-funded program will support highly motivated and talented undergraduate students to conduct independent but guided research that focuses on Coastal Ocean Systems and Sustainability at the Wrigley Marine Science Center (WMSC) on Catalina Island, CA. 

Students will get hands-on research experience, training in laboratory and field methodologies, introductory lectures and seminars in oceanography and marine science, academic and career advisement, as well as opportunities to explore different parts of the island and ecosystems.  Other benefits include: $500/week stipend, housing at the WMSC, reimbursement for travel from host institution (up to $500), and transportation between the WMSC and the mainland.

We welcome applications from students who have completed at least one year of undergraduate study and will be enrolled as an undergraduate in the Fall of 2014.  Students must be U.S. citizens, U.S. nationals or permanent residents of the U.S. to be eligible for this program.  We especially encourage students from underrepresented groups in STEM fields or schools with limited research opportunities to apply.  This program will be particularly useful for undergraduate students with a strong interest in pursuing graduate school or a career in marine science.  Competitive applicants will have at least a 3.0 GPA, one semester of chemistry, one semester of biology, and one semester of calculus or statistics.

The Volunteer Habitat Restoration Program is provided through the Friends of the Cedar River Watershed. The program engages youth and adult volunteers in hands-on restoration activities. The internship focuses on learning and understanding the habitat restoration process and assisting with volunteer events. 

Hours:

Minimum of 20 office hours and 2 weekend restoration events per month.

Interns are provided with training on how to write for the online environment while maintaining high journalistic standards, a skill that proves invaluable for anyone who may want to break into journalism or write a blog in the future. 

The International is a small, but dedicated team that works toward furthering global understanding of issues through focused investigative journalism. The team has always been quite young, with most of the team in their twenties, they have established a very high standing for themselves. The goal is not to shape what people think, but carefully nourish a more perspicacious approach towards consuming the news. They are an independent company.
