The position involves the characterization forest biometric properties using field data and remotely sensed image data. The remote sensing platforms will include unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV), airplane, and satellite sensors. Extensive field work is a requirement of the position.

Position: PhD Assistantship; Three years of funding available (research and teaching assistantship) with a goal of securing project funding for the duration of the students’ program.

 

Project background: Dr. Christine Vatovec has funding available for one doctoral-level student to conduct environmental health social science research that is related to medical care.  Current projects focus on two areas regarding the interplay between human health and the environment: 1) the socio-ecological consequences of medical care, and 2) the human health benefits of nature contact.

 

Responsibilities: The successful applicant will work with Dr. Vatovec to develop a research protocol, apply for grant funding, conduct field research (e.g. interviews, observations), analyze data, and prepare publications and presentations for academic and lay audiences.  The position is for a minimum of three years during which time the student will serve as a teaching assistant (10 hours/week) and research assistant (10 hours/week).

 

Qualifications: The successful applicant will have a background in environmental studies or a related discipline, and an interest in environmental health, social science research, and qualitative methodology.  While not required, preference will be given to applicants who have earned a MPH, or are interested in participating in the Certificate in Public Health program (http://learn.uvm.edu/health-3/public-health-certificate/) at UVM.

We are looking for engaging and motivated graduate and undergraduate students who want to make a difference to underrepresented youth in Seattle.  Starting this month, you can train to become a Seattle MESA math and science tutor for local middle and high school students.  

WHO: Engaging and motivated UW graduate and undergraduate students who want to work with middle and high school students from underrepresented groups.  We are looking for students who want training and experience working in local Seattle schools with a cohort of trained peers.  MESA tutors must attend our fall MESA STEM Tutor Training Basic Skills workshop, enroll in our 1 credit winter, weekly seminar and commit to working 2-3 hours per week in the winter and spring in Seattle Public Schools.  And in case you were wondering….STEM stands for Science, Technology, Engineering/Environment and Math.

WHAT: Join the Seattle MESA Tutor Training Program.  Seattle MESA provides enrichment opportunities and high quality resources that inspire students underrepresented in STEM fields, to pursue education and careers in math, engineering and science (http://www.seattlemesa.org/).  We are offering a tutor training and certification for UW graduate and undergraduate students to work with Seattle middle and high school students from underrepresented groups in math and science. 

1) MESA STEM Tutor Training.  This is a 6 hour tutor skills and cultural competency training designed to get you ready to work one on one and in small groups with Seattle middle and high school students in math and science.

2) Winter 1 credit seminar and service learning.  This is a weekly, winter quarter seminar designed to enrich your tutoring skills and provide a cohort-based learning network through short readings, activities and discussions of your weekly tutoring experience.  You will observe teachers and your students in their classrooms and then tutor your small group as part of the seminar experience.  This will be available in the Winter Time Schedule (C ENV 490).  Please email me for an add code.

 General Duties/Description: Provide a variety of administrative support in fiscally-related duties such as: 

  • Assist with monthly budget reconciliation including follow-up on missing documents
  • Create budget and grant file folders
  • Copy, fax and sort various documents
  • Maintain records, perform electronic mail tasks
  • File reports, receipts, and other documents
  • Enter data and maintain various accounting of grant/budget logs or databases including verify and process fiscal/accounting data, perform basic computing, calculating and manual or automated posting of data; make corrections as required
  • Assist with travel-related accounting processes
  • Might occasionally deliver or pick up grant proposal/award documents between the School of Aquatic and Fishery Sciences department and the Office of Sponsored Programs, the Grant and Contract Accounting office, or other campus departments
  • Serve as back-up telephone and in-person contact, receive visitors, respond to inquiries regarding office/departmental policies and procedures (requires substantial knowledge of school policies and procedures)
  • Sort and distribute office mail if needed
