UW Recycling MiniMax Recycling Project Coordinator

Start Date: Immediately

Hours/Times: Negotiable

Compensation: $12 per hour

General Description:

Under the direction of the Program Operations Manager, provide specialized coordination of the MiniMax program, a campus-wide recycling and solid waste campaign that advocates personal responsibility of waste generation and disposal by promoting minimum waste and maximum recycling.

General job responsibilities include:

Provide coordination of the MiniMax program, a campus-wide recycling and solid waste program on the main UW campus. Work with Recycling & Solid Waste staff regarding implementation of the MiniMax program and installation of the recycling and waste collection containers. Resolve inquiries and complaints regarding the program and its implementation.

Coordinate and conduct “building-to-building” education and outreach to promote the program and overall waste reduction efforts. This includes site visits and developing detailed installation plans. Advise UW faculty, staff, students, and the general public regarding the policies and procedures for the MiniMax program.

Work directly with Manager and Program Coordinators to implement the MiniMax program campus-wide. Develop and distribute promotional and educational material as needed.  Assemble, label, or otherwise prepare recycling and waste containers for installation. Assist in distribution and placement of collection containers at each participating building.  

Conduct systems analysis on effectiveness of program and its impact on overall waste diversion efforts. Identify efficiencies and needed areas of improvement.

Maintain and update department equipment inventory records and MiniMax building list; perform physical inventories as required.

Use word processing, graphics, statistical, spreadsheet and database software as required.

Provide general administrative support to Recycling & Solid Waste staff as required. 

Perform other related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

Pursuing an undergraduate degree or a Masters degree Good oral and written communications skills

Good project coordination skills

Good customer service skills

Desirable Qualifications

Experience conducting educational outreach or coordinating promotions/campaigns

Experience and/or interest in recycling, composting or related field (eg. solid waste management, waste prevention, etc.)

POSITION SUMMARY:

The corpsmember position is a training-level, seasonal position with EarthCorps, offered through the Corporation for National and Community Service (CNCS). Corpsmembers spend 80% of their time in the field engaged in environmental restoration projects throughout the Puget Sound region (in urban, suburban, and rural settings). Restoration is physically demanding service that takes place outdoors in all weather conditions. Projects can include stream and salmon habitat restoration, erosion control, invasive plant removal (weed removal), native plant installation, trail construction and maintenance, and volunteer management. Corpsmembers spend 20% of their time in classes, workshops, and field trainings as part of EarthCorps’ education program. Education sessions mirror the learning goals of the EarthCorps experience, with curriculum covering basic botany and ecology of the Pacific Northwest, environmental restoration theories and concepts, topics in natural resource management and global environmental issues, leadership skills, and interpersonal and cross-cultural communication.

 

CORPSMEMBER TERMS OF SERVICE:

  • STATUS: Temporary, non-exempt – Enrolled through CNCS
  • PERIOD: June 4 – December 13, 2012
  • RATE OF PAY: Living stipend of approx. $1,120/month

Summary

The Well KEPT Program is a summer youth employment program offered through the Natural Resource Division of the Parks & Community Services Department. The program is designed to provide Bellevue youth with education, job skills, and career development training in the field of park resource management. Work focuses on parkland renovation and maintenance; projects may include forest enhancement, wetland restoration, and trail construction. The Well KEPT Program combines on-the-job work experience, environmental education, and career development training to instill strong self-esteem, good work habits, and sound environmental ethics. 

Position needed from Approximately June 6, 2012 – September 2, 2012

Primary Responsibilities

  • Assist the Park Ranger with program administration, hiring the 10-person youth crew, and scheduling projects for the youth crew.
  • Responsible for direct supervision of the youth crew.
  • Must posses a strong customer service attitude and high level of interpersonal skills, including the ability to work effectively with youth.
  • Must be able to work with minimal supervision and to direct and motivate crews independently in the field.
 Qualifications
 
 Must be at least 19 years of age with completion of at least two years of college desirable.
  • Required to possess a valid Washington driver’s license by date of hire. Must have and maintain a good driving record according to City standards. Current original drivers abstract required at time of interview.
  • Experience in environmental restoration, trail construction, and/or landscape maintenance preferred.
  • Supervisory experience working with diverse youth groups preferred.
  • Experience using a variety of hand and/or power tools beneficial.
  • Criminal History check required on all applicants.

[job] – Summer Camp Teacher with Friends of the Issaquah Salmon Hatchery

Friends of the Issaquah Salmon Hatchery (FISH) is a nonprofit organization dedicated to retaining and improving the historic Issaquah Salmon Hatchery and promoting watershed stewardship through education.  This will be FISH’s 11th year offering day camps that teach about salmon, habitat and watershed  stewardship.  This year there are 3 weeks of camp for 6-8 year olds and one week for 9-11 year olds at the hatchery, one week for 9-11 year olds at Baxter Barn in Fall City, and a 3-half-day camp for preschoolers at the hatchery.  Camp for 6-11 year olds is called “Salmon Science Camp” and the preschool camp is known as “Little Fry Camp”.

Job Description: The Camp teacher supports FISH’s summer education program and Education Coordinator (EC). The teacher will work with the EC to deliver high quality, hands-on day camps centered on salmon and the ecology and watersheds of the Northwest.  Camps have a focus on science, but include arts, games and other elements.  Camp takes place indoors and outdoors at the Issaquah Salmon Hatchery in the Watershed Science Center and surrounding area; the week at Baxter Barn is 11 miles away in Fall City.


This is a 6.5-week temporary contract position.  Position includes training and set up for camp; camp begins on June 25, 2012 and concludes on August 10.  There is no camp week of July 2; that week will be used for planning, prep and set up.  Hours of work are Monday-Friday and will vary between 8:00 am and 4 pm; training and prep for camp will be 12 hours prior to June 25.  Total hours: during camp 40 hours per week, total term up to 268 hours.

Duties & Responsibilities:

·       Teach and co-teach interactive science and environmental education lessons, activities and games

·       Model and inspire respect and care for the environment

·       Supervise campers along with the EC, maintaining campers’ emotional and physical safety

·       Assist with camp logistics such as set up, clean up, and paperwork

·       Provide leadership and positive example to youth volunteer camp helpers

·       Communicate professionally with campers families, volunteer camp helpers and the EC

·       Maintain safe and organized indoor and outdoor camp environment.

 

Minimum Skills & Qualifications:

·       Two years experience working with elementary-aged children in environmental education

·       Knowledge of Pacific salmon and northwest ecology

·       Enjoy working in an outdoor environment

·       Must be at least 18 years of age and pass Washington State Patrol background check

·       CPR/1st Aid Certified

 

Preferred Abilities & Attributes:

·       Bachelors degree in natural sciences, education or related field

·       Desire and ability to develop and adapt lessons related to natural history and environmental science

·       Ability to be flexible, think on your feet and maintain a positive outlook even in stressful situations

·       Experience working with preschool-aged children
