Position description:
The UW Seattle Office of Undergraduate Admissions is hiring two professional staff, 12-month contract (summer 2012 to summer 2013) admissions counselor interns. The positions are full time and paid.
The mission of the Office of Undergraduate Admissions is to attract and enroll talented and diverse students in order to help create an intellectually and culturally vibrant student body. Responsibilities include: counseling prospective freshman, transfer, international and postbaccalaureate students; responding to admissions inquiries via phone and email; representing the UW at on-campus information sessions; traveling throughout the Northwest to represent the UW at high schools and college fairs; application review; assisting in outreach and recruitment programs; giving campus tours on a back-up basis; covering reception desk on a back-up basis; and other duties as assigned. We are looking for people who are enthusiastic about the UW, have a strong work ethic, and exercise sound judgment, professionalism and maturity.

Requirements:
Bachelor’s degree. Must be flexible and have the drive to work in a fast-paced office. During fall and spring recruitment seasons, this position requires the ability to work evenings and some weekends; travel to remote locations; and load and transport admissions materials, displays, and other equipment. Strong interpersonal, writing and public speaking skills are necessary, as well the ability to represent the University in a positive way to diverse populations. The position begins June 18, 2012, and ends June 28, 2013.
Desired:
Involvement in UW clubs or organizations is also desired. As a role model for prospective students, a strong candidate has had a positive UW experience as a student and campus community member.

Job Responsibilities:
• Recruitment: Build a team of 15-50 canvassers by recruiting from within the local community.
Interview prospective staff and make hiring decisions.
• Staff Management: Teach canvassing/fundraising skills. Work with your staff in individual and group settings, with a particular eye towards developing leaders.
Cultivate a welcoming and motivating atmosphere.
• Canvassing: Canvass in the field for four days per week, to train new and experienced staff in the field and meet personal fundraising requirements.
• Administration: Carefully track income and expenses. Manage the budget for your office.
Process staff payroll. Maintain records for future organizing efforts.
Qualifications:
Strong communication and motivational skills, work ethic, and desire for political change are essential. Candidates must be able to work within a team, have proven leadership ability and experience handling a lot of responsibility. Strong self-direction and the ability to take initiative are also necessary qualifications. Previous field or canvassing experience is a plus, and may qualify candidates for additional leadership positions.
Training:
Newly hired directors will typically spend three weeks doing field training, working intensely alongside experienced directors and will also attend week-long national classroom training. Additionally, directors receive support from regional management staff throughout their time on staff. After one year in the position, staff will have learned the basics of running a successful grassroots campaign, including, but not limited to, fundraising and donor recruitment, hiring and supervising staff and/or volunteers, and turf management.
Expectations:
Positions last through the 2012 Presidential Election. Campaign hours can run 80-100 hours per week, including work on weekends.
Salary/Benefits:
Annual salary for Assistant Canvass Directors begins at $24,000. Staff may opt into our health care plan (PPO). Paid training, vacation and sick days are included; student loan assistance is available.

Some other important pieces of information:
Dates: Spring employment is from March 16th-June 16th, 2012. You must be able to commit to working these three months.
Salary: $230/week (based on a 5-day work week) + room/board in nice staff housing. There are other great perks, including the opportunity to learn sea kayaking and use a kayak from our fleet to explore the islands with other staff.
Drug/alcohol/tobacco-free environment: We do not allow illegal drugs, alcohol-use, or tobacco-use on our property. Because we work closely with children, we do a pre-employment drug test and random drug testing throughout the season to ensure that we are drug-free.
Requirements: Experience working in environmental education or BS/BA in environmental science, education, recreation, or related field preferred. First aid/CPR certification by first day of employment preferred. You must have some experience working with children. Being a team player, having a sense of humor and a strong work ethic are essential!

The National Wildlife Federation is seeking a Wildlife and Climate Safeguards Intern to support NWF’s Climate Change Safeguards team, which focuses on climate change adaptation, wildlife protection and responsible renewable energy development. Major team initiatives include development of criteria and guidance for carrying out climate-smart conservation and wildlife-friendly approaches to wind and solar energy. The intern will also play a key role in the development of a new program that involves working with cities and towns to promote the use of nature-based solutions for climate change adaptation. The Safeguards team also is involved in policy and legislative work on issues such as State Wildlife Action Plans, endangered species, invasive species, land protection and management, and conservation funding.
