Program on the Environment (PoE) has an excellent opportunity for a Graduate student Reader/Grader for the Spring 2013 quarter.

The reader/grader will provide support for ENVIR 490 (Pre-Capstone Seminar) and ENVIR 492 (Post-Capstone Seminar) in the Spring Quarter of 2013. The capstone sequence of courses (ENVIR 490–491–492) is required for all UW seniors majoring in Environmental Studies. These courses are designed to provide students with hands-on experience in environment-related work, to improve their written and oral communication skills, and to help them prepare for their next steps after graduation—either in graduate school or in a career field. As such, the reader/grader will assist in copyediting draft products. 

In general, the duties for this appointment include evaluating and providing feedback on: 
-draft capstone proposals written by pre-capstone students (ENVIR 490)
-drafts of analysis papers written by post-capstone students (ENVIR 492)
-draft capstone summary statement written by post-capstone students (ENVIR 492)

The schedule for the assignments is as follows:
-ENVIR 492 draft analysis paper: May 10-20
-ENVIR 492 draft Capstone summary: May 17-27
-ENVIR 490 draft proposal: May 22-30

Conditions of Employment:
-Currently registered UW graduate student 
-Compensation: $12.00/hour. The reader/grader will need to work a total of 70 – 80 hours during spring quarter. Most work will occur between the sixth and tenth week of the quarter.

In 2011 Education Outside, in partnership with San Francisco Unified School District launched the Corps for Education Outside—the first service corps program in the United States dedicated to transforming urban public schools into centers of 21st century experiential learning, environmental sustainability, and innovation. The Corps program is designed to harness the enthusiasm and passion of college graduates who serve as the point people for outdoor experiential education and school greening activities at their school sites. Corps members play a central role in sparking students’ interest in science, building a more eco- and food-literate student population, increasing the energy efficiency of their schools’ infrastructure, decreasing schools’ waste streams, building strong school communities, and promoting outdoor education opportunities. Corps members receive a 10-month salary of $25,000, plus medical, dental, and vision insurance for each year of service, as well as paid professional development throughout their experience.

SummaryThe Assistant Park Ranger I is a part time 1040 position offered through the Bellevue Parks & Community Services Department Natural Resource Division.  This position is a front line customer service position directly in contact with the public on a daily basis.  The Assistant Park Ranger I provides environmental program development and delivery, patrolling, marketing, staffing and environmental interpretive support.  The position reports to the Park Ranger.

Hours: Part-time and on the weekends.

Salary: Starting minimum $14.74 per hour

Responsibilities:

  • Provide Program assistance to the Park Ranger.
  • Design and implement adult and family environmental education and interpretive programs for the Lewis Creek Visitor Center.
  • Provide outreach to the public and communicate park rules and policies to users in a professional and courteous manner. 
  • Provide support at other Natural Resource facilities, Visitor Centers and during events, as needed.  Duties include facility staffing, responding to customer inquiries, and program delivery.  Tasks may include opening/closing facilities, answering phones, greeting visitors, conducting surveys, monitoring rentals, working on assigned projects and keeping a neat and clean Visitor Center.
  • Creating and coordinating interpretive displays and brochures.
  • Position may involve leading weekly canoe tours during summer months.
  • Conduct park patrol duties including park/trail patrols, providing customer service to park patrons, educating patrons regarding park rules and regulations, maintaining visitation and patrol logs, and conducting park/trail inspections.
  • The position may also provide administrative support and programming assistance to other Parks Department and Natural Resource Division program areas as needed.

Seattle Community Colleges: Sustainability Coordinator – Graduate Student Intern

Position Summary

This is a part-time temporary internship opportunity in support of the Seattle Community College District’s Sustainability Initiative. The intern will serve as lead coordinator for the development of a District-wide sustainability plan. To prepare the plan, the intern will first assist and coordinate efforts on each campus to develop baseline information on existing sustainability activities, using the AASHE STARS assessment system. The position is temporary and will run from the hiring date to the end of the academic year.

Research Fellowships [Deadline January 18th, 2012 at 5:00PM]

Graduate fellowships support new and innovative research relevant to managing climate change impacts in US National Parks, including transboundary issues and comparisons to Mexican or Canadian protected areas. Awards will be made in the range of $5,000 – $20,000 for research undertaken in calendar years 2013-14. 

Projects must be empirical; theoretical research and model development will not be supported. Relevant projects in any field of the natural, social, and cultural/historical sciences may be funded. Proposed research must be conducted in or around National Parks and must be relevant to NPS management needs. Upon completion of the fellowship, students are required to provide a summary report of their results and one or more educational products or publications meant for a broader audience.

Students enrolled in Masters and PhD programs in the US, Canada, and Mexico may apply. Both U.S. citizens and non-citizens are eligible. All applicants will be notified of selection decisions in April, 2013.

Paid Internships [Deadline January 21, 2013]

Internships enable students to gain practical experience in diverse fields related to climate change response, to explore career interests, and to build professional networks. This year 15 internship positions are offered in National Parks, NPS offices, and technical centers throughout the continental US, Alaska, and Hawaii. These diverse positions include fieldbased research and monitoring of climate change impacts; development of interpretive, educational, and staff-training programs; analyses of carbon footprints; web-based communication; and community engagement in science. Locations include urban historic parks, national program offices, and remote wilderness. All positions pay wages of $12/hour and last about 12 weeks. Most occur during the summer, though some include the spring or fall. Most include housing at little or no cost to the student. All positions for 2013 are described at ccyi.org. Applicants must be current undergraduate or first-year graduate students in a US university, or be in the process of applying to a graduate program at a US university.

Deadline: November 30, 2012

Salary: $12.77-16.18 hourly, depending upon level of education

Division: Department of Natural Resources & Parks – Recycling and Environmental Services 

Duration: January 2013 – December 2013 with potential for extension

Hours: The internship may work part time (approximately 15-20 hours a week) during the regular school year within the hours of 7:00AM – 5:00PM, Monday through Friday.

Description: The King County Solid Waste Division plans, develops and implements a variety of waste reduction and recycling programs that target residents, businesses and schools. Interns assist with the planning, development and implementation of various programs that employ progressive waste management policies and programs. One position will assist with Green Building and the other will assist with Waste Prevention and Recycling outreach programs.    

  • Assist with research, event planning and development of education and outreach materials for RES projects such as Recycle More campaign, Transfer Station recycling services, Green Building Program, Eco consumer, What Do I Do With (WDIDW) web site, Hazardous Waste collection programs, Green Schools, and Climate Change initiatives.
  • Assist with coordinating tours, meetings and other events for green building education.
  • Apply creativity and initiative in assisting with developing newsletters and promotional materials.
  • Assist with developing outreach tools, including social media tools and webinars, to engage new members in local product stewardship organization.
  • Assist with creating, editing and posting web pages
