Undergraduate Research Symposium Information Sessions

We will discuss topics such as the Symposium Day schedule, the difference between poster and oral presentation sessions, connect you with additional resources to assist you through your application and presentation preparation process, and answer any questions you might have. In addition, we highly encourage you to also attend an abstract-writing workshop prior to completing your application.

Abstract Writing Workshops are tailored to students who are applying to the Annual Undergraduate Research Symposium, but are open to everyone.

The abstract writing workshop includes information on what exactly is an abstract, how to write one, and what information to include. If you already have a draft, you may also bring this to the session for feedback.

Undergraduate Research General Information Session

Friday, February 17 – 11:00am-12:00pm, Mary Gates Hall 171

URP Information Sessions address how the Undergraduate Research Program can help the student pursue her/his research interests.

Primarily for undergraduates who have yet to begin research, the sessions provide research resources, information on funding, and suggestions for approaching faculty. Additionally, the sessions are highly student-driven, with an emphasis on student questions and concerns. Students interested in attending the UW, including community college transfer students, are welcome to the sessions.

The 2012 Symposium Application is open and we encourage undergraduates to sign up for a Symposium Info. Session and Abstract Writing Workshop (info. and registration below) to help prepare you for the event!

Looking for a one-credit course that sheds light upon cutting-edge research at the UW? Research Exposed Lecture Series introduces you to current and exciting research in a wide variety of disciplines, including how faculty come up with research ideas, what methods they use to explore research questions, and how undergrads can become involved in the knowledge-making process. This 1-credit course is open to all students–no prerequisites required.

[volunteer] Research the Fish of Puget Sound

Volunteer needed ASAP! If you’re interested in the fish of Puget Sound, here is a wonderful opportunity for you to catch in on some action with Sean McDonald’s research project.

DATE: Thursday, November 10th
LOCATION: Fisheries Science building (FSH -meet at west side loading dock)
TIME: Departing from UW at 6:15PM (arrive at least 10 minutes beforehand)

The trip will be 7-8 hours. Be prepared to wear chest waders, stand in the water in the dark, and do mildly strenuous work. You will be catching fish that have been tagged in the summer to track their paths and growth.

WHAT TO BRING:

  • Warm clothing
  • Rain gear
  • Rubber boots
  • Headlamp
  • A snack

*We encourage ALL undergraduates to check out the undergraduate research symposium.  You could be presenting your capstone project or other research projects here next year*!

Please join us in celebrating the accomplishments of our undergraduates next Friday, May 20th from 12pm-5pm at the 14th Annual UW Undergraduate Research Symposium.  This year, over 900 students will be presenting their work in poster and oral presentation sessions in Mary Gates Hall (with a few additional sessions in Johnson Hall and Meany Studio Theatre).

The Online Proceedings (including event schedule, presenter and mentor search tools, and abstracts) is now available on our website: https://expo.uw.edu/expo/apply/231/proceedings where you can find individual students by name, major, mentor name, or mentor department.
