The SCA has several internships available with the United States Forest Service within the Mt. Baker-Snoqualmie National Park. With start dates in June, we are actively seeking to fill these positions. 

Wilderness Ranger Intern 

June 22, 2014-September 14, 2014 Mount Baker-Snoqualmie National Forest, Everett, WA 

Successful candidates will serve as Wilderness Rangers patrolling trails in Wilderness areas and adjoining backcountry within the beautiful Mt. Baker-Snoqualmie National Forest in Washington state. Almost half of the Mt Baker-Snoqualmie National Forest is in designated Wilderness. Work will include maintaining backcountry campsites, signs, toilets and other facilities along trails, at wilderness lakes and other popular destinations in the Wilderness, 60%; assisting visitors and providing educational information about low impact (leave no trace) backcountry skills, 30%; monitoring conditions and collecting information needed by Wilderness managers,10%.

Developed and Dispersed Recreation Intern

Interns will spend the summer working within the Recreation division of the Mt. Baker-Snoqualmie National Forest. Interns will perform maintenance tasks at developed and dispersed recreation sites. Facilities maintenance is a necessary way to minimize sanitation impacts. Interns will also keep dispersed sites maintained in order to restore natural areas and reduce erosion. Assigned duties will include the following: -maintaining campgrounds, trailheads and dispersed recreation sites in the Skykomish Ranger District -visitor contact -collecting data -cleaning restrooms -removing litter

Wilderness Trails Intern

Serve as a member of the Skykomish Ranger District Trail Crew performing trail maintenance primarily within the Henry M. Jackson, Alpine Lakes, and Wild Sky Wilderness areas. We maintain a system of about 150 miles of trail, including a segment of the Pacific Crest Trail. Work includes logout with crosscut saw, repair of structures, tread and drainage maintenance, and brushing. May also include some construction of a trail relocation. First couple of weeks are day trips, including training on tool use, orientation, and trail maintenance training. Starting in July, the crew typically backpacks in about 5 miles and works out of this base camp during the work week. Bunkhouse provided for non-camping days in the town of Skykomish, WA. Position requires ability to work as part of a small crew and backpack, hike, and perform manual labor in a range of weather conditions in the Cascade mountains.

This position is with the Threatened and Endangered Program on Marine Corps Base, Camp Lejeune.  Main duties include protection, monitoring and management of threatened and endangered species.  Camp Lejeune has approximately 140,000 acres of forest and 11 miles of relatively undisturbed beach, which are home to several endangered, threatened or otherwise protected species.  Currently, threatened and endangered species on Camp Lejeune include the red-cockaded woodpecker, loggerhead and green sea turtles, piping plover, seabeach amaranth, and rough-leved loosestrife.  Other protected species include nesting bald eagles, and coastal goldenrod.  Duties include the following: – monitoring of nesting sea turtles (daily surveys from May-August, protecting nests from predators with cages)- protection of endangered species sites (signs, painted boundaries, roped off areas, etc)- protection of red-cockaded woodpecker cavity trees from fire (clearing vegetation from around the trees)- monitoring of endangered plants- locating and protecting shorebird (including piping plover) nests,- bald eagle nest monitoring- protecting potential shorebird habitat- GPSing locations of endangered species locations, boundaries, etc.In addition, there will be opportunities to work with the Base Forestry Branch (timber marking, prescribed burning), Land and Wildlife Resources (survey for game species and migratory birds, planting wildlife food plots, assist with wood duck boxes, etc.) and Archaeology.

The Student Conservation Association (SCA) SCA is America’s #1 conservation service organization seeks two qualified applicants to lead, educate, and inspire high school students for the Seattle and WA National Parks Summer Crew Programs. 

Co-lead, mentor and coach a crew of 10 students, ages 15-19, while completing various conservation service projects designed to build an ethic of community and environmental stewardship. Projects include a range of activities such as trail and park maintenance, habitat restoration, revitalization of abandoned urban properties or to urban agriculture. In addition, leaders will facilitate pre- and post- program planning which includes crew training, environmental education and reporting. 

Seattle Crews: July 1st – August 2nd, 2013 

• Co-Lead a commuting crew of 12 members, ages 15-19 

• Crews run Mon-Fri for 5-6 weeks

• Facilitate job readiness & youth leadership skills while working on trails & habitat restoration projects in Seattle’s public parks 

WA State National Parks Crews: multiple sites, June 30th – August 25th, 2013 

• Co-Lead a residential trail crew of 8 members, ages 15-19 

• Three sessions of 15 day crews throughout the summer – work one or all three sessions 

• Facilitate youth leadership & development skills while working on trails & habitat restoration projects on WA State’s public lands 

Qualifications: 

• Must be a minimum of 21 years of age 

• Must have ability to legally work in the US 

• Current First Aid certification & CPR required by the start of the orientation training 

• Experience working with youth or young adults (ages 14-18) 

• Experience as a teacher or leader in educational environment 

• Experience with conservation work skills or related skills, preferred; i.e. trail maintenance, trail construction, chainsaw, carpentry, landscaping, and gardening 

• Ability to perform manual, physical labor for up to 8 hours per day, exposed to the elements. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move 40 pounds or more. 

• Must be able to attend mandatory Crew Leader training: June 3rd– June 12th, 2013 

• Valid driver’s license and MVR that meets SCA standards required 

• Ability to meet SCA’s criminal background check standards 

• Must have personal housing arrangements in program city 

Compensation: Total program salary up to $3,450 on Seattle Crews or up to $5,175 on WA State Crews depending on experience & crew length. Crew Leader Orientation & Work Skills (travel, food & lodging provided) work schedule varies depending on location.
