Spring Funding for CoEnv Student Conferences (April 17 deadline)

College of the Environment Student Meeting Fund

Spring 2015 Quarter Deadline: April 17, 2015

The College of the Environment (CoEnv) supports undergraduate, Masters, and PhD students in furthering their careers, and in particular in connecting students to networking opportunities afforded by the presentation of their original work in meeting venues.  CoEnv supports two types of student attendance at meetings:

  • Individual Travel to Meetings:
Maximums of $500 for North American travel and $750 for international travel; one per student per degree career; we anticipate making about 15 awards annually. The award amounts are modest to enable CoEnv to provide funding to a greater number of students. Students are expected to seek and receive funding from other sources, and students who do so will receive funding priority.
  • Student-Organized Meetings:
Maximum of $1,500 or 20% of total expenditures, whichever is smaller; one per organization annually; maximum of 4 awards given out annually.

Background:

The Trail Blazers is a volunteer organization that contributes its time, energy and knowledge toward helping the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife. Members participate in a variety of studies, conservation and wilderness protection activities, camp cleanups, stream restoration and trail maintenance, but the fish stocking and surveying activities have given the Trail Blazers their focus that has endured since 1933.

The Trail Blazers, Inc. are most interested in assisting students who seek a career that will enhance the management of wilderness, natural resources and fisheries science in Washington State’s mountains.

Eligibility:

To be eligible for consideration, students must complete the application form (on the website) and submit it along with the attachments requested. It must be received by May 15 of the year of the award.

Student Selection:

Applicants will be judged on the criteria of scholarship, leadership, integrity, and other personal achievements. Preference will be given to those applicants who demonstrate an interest in pursuing careers that involve professional work in Washington’s high country. (Examples: forester, fisheries scientist, geologist, wildlife biologist, botanist, or wilderness recreation specialist.)  Applicants with existing or planned research work in Washington’s high country will be given additional preference.

The Mary Gates Endowment for Students is currently accepting scholarship applications.  Mary Gates scholarships provide $4,000 ($2,000 per quarter for two quarters) for students to pursue leadership or research projects of their own choosing and design with guidance from a mentor.  Previous recipients have come from all fields of study, including the arts, humanities, social sciences and STEMM.

Mary Gates scholarships benefit students in the current academic year, and are open to all UW undergraduate students regardless of class year, major or residency status.  Students from Bothell, Seattle and Tacoma campuses are all encouraged to apply.  Deadlines are coming up soon, so students should begin the application process and attend an information session and application workshop.
