SUMMARY:
The Wastewater Treatment Division (WTD) community services team is seeking two intern or work study students to provide education, public involvement, outreach and communication assistance in support of WTD’s long-standing mission to educate the public about the health and environmental benefits of wastewater infrastructure in our region.
This position is effective July 1,2014 and will continue through June 1, 2015 so long as minimum qualifications and work schedule requirements continue to be met.

WORK LOCATION
Work is performed in a downtown Seattle office and other industrial wastewater treatment
facilities throughout King County. Occasionally events will be arranged at schools, parks and
community centers. Spring and fall work is primarily performed in outdoor industrial
environments, winter and summer primarily in office setting.
WORK SCHEDULE
This position requires 12-20 hours per week during the school year and 12-30 hours a week
during the summer. During the school year interns are required to work 2 days a week between
the hours of 9 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. Approximately one Saturday a month will be required. School
schedules must be arranged every quarter to meet these minimum availability
requirements. Continued employment is contingent on being able to meet these scheduling
requirements.
JOB DUTIES:
EDUCATION AND SKILL DEVELOPMENT BENEFITS OF POSITION:
· Public speaking and written communication (web and print)
· Outreach to and collaboration with diverse audiences throughout King County
· Internal and external partnership building and development
· Ongoing subject area training in water quality issues, wastewater management and design,
resource recycling technologies and program management, communication, community
involvement, group organizing, education programming, government operations and
organization, industrial safety.
· Event design and implementation
· Independent project management
· Group project participation
DUTIES:
· Conduct water quality educational tours and field trips for King County residents and students
of wastewater treatment facilities
· Research, plan and implement region-wide outreach projects
· Provide educational support at public meetings, regional fairs and events
· Research and develop updates for educational websites, interactive and informational
materials
· Work with community services staff to continually develop, assess and improve
communication tools (web, print, social media)
EXPERIENCE, QUALIFICATIONS, KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS:
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
· Full-time enrollment
· Valid WA State License
· The ability to traverse industrial facilities for 2-4 hours at a time, including stairs, tunnels, grated walkways and capability of moving over materials on the ground such as 4-inch hoses.
· Ability to coordinate schedules and work closely with other interns and co-workers
· Ability and comfort with working both independently and on teams.
· Experience working with youth
· Experience working with diverse populations
· Advanced coursework, projects, or work experience with environmental and infrastructure topics and issues
· Desire to develop and improve communication skills
· Flexibility and adaptability in handling diverse situations with groups of program participants – situations related to learning styles, logistics, schedules, group needs
· Demonstrate good time management practices
· Demonstrated ability to keep self-motivated and independently self-manage in a work and/or volunteer setting.
· Successful candidates will be subject to a background check at King County’s expense prior to a final internship offer
DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS
Experience in any of the following areas – through school, work or community – is highly desirable
· Experience teaching/coordinating youth
· Experience with public speaking or customer service
· Experience with any of the following written communications: web sites, blogs, brochures, fliers
· Experience working with South Seattle, Southeast King County communities
· Experience and/or interest in communication/translation of technical information
· Career interest in public education and/or environmental management
