Distance Learning in Citizen Science Projects
Effective training methods for non-expert volunteers in scien- tific research projects (citizen scientists) are important for gathering accurate data. Since ongoing in-person training is often not feasible, I set out to investigate what attributes of distance learning materials contribute to effective training and to create a 30-minute video outlining protocols for Wash- ington Sea Grant’s Crab Team. Patterns emerged through research that suggested crucial components to training mate- rial that were then incorporated into my video. Repetition, consistency, and the application of volunteer activities to scientific research are important for distance learning material to keep volunteers engaged and informed.
