As an environmental advocacy organization, Washington Environmental Council engages with volunteers to act on local and state issues. Recently, the organization is learning about environmental justice, giving a broader understanding of the environment as where people live, work, and play. As legislative field intern, I communicated these issues with volunteers daily. For my project, I researched the challenges that environmental organizations face when choosing an inclusive view of environmentalism that seeks racial and environmental justice through interviews, a survey, and literature review. I found three major areas of opportunity: internal processes, member education, and relationship building.
