April 12-16: Capstone Conversations

Everyone is welcome to attend one or more of the Capstone Conversations (CapCon) scheduled during the week of April 12-16. During these sessions capstone students host small group discussions to share about their experience. This is a learning exercise to help them practice talking to diverse audiences about their achievements.  It’s also a great opportunity for you to learn more about the PoE Capstone!

2021 PoE Alumni Scholarship

The PoE Alumni Council (PAC) is proud to support environmental studies students by providing a $500 scholarship to help in the advancement of their academic endeavors. This is an opportunity to showcase what motivated you to pursue a degree in environmental studies.

WHO CAN APPLY: All students enrolled as environmental studies majors during autumn 2021: no restrictions on hometown/nation/providence/region/state

Fashioning Sustainability Seminars

Explore environmental, social, and economic impacts of the human relationship with clothing and fashion through the perspective of a diverse group of professionals working in academia, advocacy, arts, business, and science. We’ll investigate the complete lifecycle of our clothing, from production of raw materials, through manufacturing, shipping, and retail, and end-of-life. Seminars will include insightful presentations and riveting Q&A with leading experts. This weekly speaker series is facilitated by Dr. P. Sean McDonald and Dr. Eli Wheat, and is open to all students. Presentations are available live to the public via YouTube.

To receive credit, students will be required to develop five thoughtful questions for our guest(s) prior to the seminar and attend synchronously in 7/10 weeks.

ACADEMIC YEAR 2020-21 RECIPIENTS:


Batoul Al-Sadi

Batoul is an Environmental Studies and Political Science major graduating 2021. She is from Mukilteo, Washington, and is currently a Storytelling and Editorial Fellow at Our Climate Voices, a digital media platform seeking to humanize the climate crisis by centering the voices of those most impacted by environmental harm through ethical storytelling. She is also interning at EPA Region 10, assisting in the development of stakeholder-driven workshops with several Tribal communities across Washington and Alaska to develop community climate adaptation plans. After graduation, Batoul hopes to pursue a career in public policy, specifically by working with frontline communities in crafting effective environmental protection policies that incorporate their firsthand, lived experiences and expertise.

 

Levi Casto

Levi is an Environmental Studies major and Diversity minor graduating in 2021. He has also completed a Professional Sales Certificate through the Foster School. Levi is from Redmond, Washington, and currently is working on his Environmental Studies Capstone Internship with the Washington State Department of Natural Resources where he uses passive acoustic monitoring to examine the presence and behaviors of songbirds in forested areas on the Olympic Peninsula. He is conducting his own research alongside this internship, and is really enjoying the opportunity to turn his birding hobby into valuable experience. Upon graduation, Levi would like to start a career as an environmental professional, and would love to eventually run an educational farm, serving communities by connecting youth to local agriculture.

 

Jayce Knerr

Jayce is double majoring in Environmental Studies and Photography with a minor in Entrepreneurship, graduating in 2023. He is from Leavenworth, Washington, and is currently working part-time all year round at Kenmore Camera as a sales associate, which has taught him many great lessons. He hope to pursue one of the fields he is majoring/ minoring in when he graduates or possibly a sales positions at a tech company.

 

 

 

Elizabeth Lee

Elizabeth is studying Environmental Studies with a minor in International Studies graduating in 2021. She is from Woodinville, Washington, and is currently working with the West Coast Region of the National Marine Fisheries Service during the Winter 2021 Quarter for the University of Washington Program on the Environment Capstone internship. She is also conducting a study on environmental, maritime, and constitutional law in the United States with respect to the Pacific Islanders of Hawaii. After receiving her undergraduate degree from the University of Washington, she will continue her studies at the University of Washington School of Law.

 

Sydney Porter

Sydney is studying Environmental Studies graduating in 2022. She is from Bellevue, Washington, and is currently the Vice-Chair of WashPIRG’s University of Washington chapter. Through WashPIRG, she works to protect the environment by organizing grassroots efforts to support legislation such as the Clean Cars by 2030 bill that is being proposed here in Washington. After graduation she hopes to continue her work on climate and environmental action through advocacy work that emphasizes equity and sustainability at the local level.

 

 

Carson Torres

Carson is studying Environmental Studies graduating in 2021. She is from Burien, Washington, and is currently an International Union for Conservation of Nature intern working with the Seagrass Species Specialist Group. She also works/volunteers for an outdoor education and leadership center, Camp Waskowitz, where she works with youth when time permits. After graduation, she plans to attend the University of Auckland in New Zealand for her Graduate Diploma in Teaching (Secondary).

February 3: Online and Digital Media Communications Panel

Please join Wednesday (4:30PM PST) for our Conversations in Environmental Communication Seminar Series. Open to the public. Our last seminar was another standout. Catch it on our YouTube Channel and be sure to subscribe and click on the bell icon to be notified when future seminars are streaming or content is uploaded. This week we’re switching gears and moving to a Q&A panel format.

The Conversations in Environmental Communication seminar on February 3rd takes us into the realm of digital and social media. We’ll be joined by an outstanding panel of experts to discuss their experience working with these formats and platforms. Our panel includes Nikolaj Lasbo, who manages and implements digital and social media for the Nature Conservancy of Washington and employs his skills as a content developer and storyteller. Marisol Morales of EarthCorps also joins us to discuss her work as digital communications manager connecting people with opportunities through digital graphics, social media, and online newsletters. Finally, Alison Morrow, environmental journalist and video content producer, rounds out our panel with her expertise in both traditional and ’new’ media; her successful YouTube channel brings environmental and current news to more than 82,000 subscribers worldwide. Instead of formal presentations, the panel will be available to answer your questions about their work and the new media landscape for environmental communications. Come with your questions!

The series explores environmental communication through the perspective of a diverse group of professionals working in the arts, journalism, social media, advocacy, business, and science. We’ll investigate how messages about nature and the environment permeate our public discourse through insightful presentations and riveting Q&A with leading experts.
